Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
I'm aware that I've given Mariner a hard time recently, with a combination of egg boxes and museum objects that really aren't up his street.

I've just been reading a book called How to Survive History by Cody Cassidy, and very entertaining it is too. One of the chapters is about how you'd survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which led me to Wikipedia to check out some images of the disaster.

Can you restore this street to its original condition? Or if you prefer, simply knock the house down and replace it with something more modern.

High res is here.

Ah, that's more like it! My entry will not be monochrome.

I lack the skills needed to rebuild or replace it, so I simply turned it into an early Autochrome color photograph as developed in 1904... and that's it for me.

An early post but I may well revisit later if I have the time

Loyd I am amazed at what you can do with AI in a mere eight hours. The colouring of the buildings and the people is remarkable.
Now you have six whole days to learn the skills needed to bring your buildings upright! The clock is ticking! Go for it!
Tip: Start by extracting all buildings individually using the Pen Tool. While you are doing that keep thinking about your next move.

Wow Ben. I'm at a loss as to how you rebuilt the houses? They are magnificent.

My friend, the rotate tool, came in handy again with this challenge. Have I mentioned how much I love it?

Wow Ben. I'm at a loss as to how you rebuilt the houses? They are magnificent.

I used Google lens to find similar buildings and grabbed a few bits. Gave up on replacing the fence added hedge.

I separated the houses out and did them separately, I replaced the right building. I added a slight texture overall to match us the grain etc.

I didn't try rotate - used free transform. I did use the distracting objects to remove wires & people, remove tool for the posts and some of the rubbish.

It took a while.

Ben, your reconstruction is superb. I wish I had done that. I couldn't find all the bits I needed.

So, why did you miss out the telegraph poles and telephone lines?

But Anna it's a completely different house!!

We all know how good and skilled you are! If you were doing this yourself by hand you would never accept such a disappointing result.

Sorry, but I am surprised.

I have family, complete with grandkids, staying. It's pretty chaotic. I hope maybe I can do something at the end of the week.

Ben, your image is absolutely superb, so well done and congratulations.

I have a lot on at the moment, so probably won't have time to do this justice.

Mariner - The colorizing site does ok, not great. They want $$ to enable it to be downloaded. Cheating a bit, I made a screenshot and then used Upscayl for a more workable size. Clouds, lighting, blemishes, and all else was done by me. Just a couple of hours actually.

Image here is the unedited AI screenshot:

Yes! They are different houses! It’s fascinating how the instructions can be interpreted. I opted for replacement rather than repair.

Re: Challenge 1100: The San Francisco Earthquake
You are quite right. I missed that completely! Apologies.

I still think Anna could have done it better ......... but at the cost of a huge amount of time and work of course.
