Challenge 1101: The pedoscope
Back in the 1960s when my mother used to drag my brother and me to shoe shops (I still hate shoe shopping) and the shop we usually visited had an unexpected surprise in the corner: a pedoscope. You stuck your foot in it and, peering through the viewing port at the top, you could see the bones in your foot. Yes, this was an X ray machine, in the days before lead aprons were a thing.

I came across this fine example in a museum recently (sorry about the reflection and, indeed, the perspective), and it reminded me of when I used to try to persuade my brother to stick his head in the foot slot, so I could see its X ray. He never agreed.

Can you reconstruct this childhood fantasy?

High res is here.

Surely that foot hole is far to small for a human head?

I remember these from the early fifties. I loved them! I had no idea they were still around in the sixties! I thought the dangers were well known by then.

I take it this was a younger brother?

Mind you if it was baby brother then wouldn't it be a paedoscope?

Senior salesman Jones, with fond memories of the pedoscope, trying to explain why it should be used again...

Well Steve, I imagine he looks a bit like you, but older.

How about a photo of him when he was, say, ten years old.

Or his first name or names.

Young Steve gets his wish.

Wasn't he a cute little fellow?

How many other brits remember Clarkes' sandals and grey flannel shorts with the elastic snake buckle belt?

Thanks Loyd. I forgot to declare that some AI (not Photoshop) was involved for Steve's face. The rest is all classic. But I am sure every one will already have guessed that.

Good work, David. I have been wondering how to do his face. I think I can manage without having to learn AI.

I remember those, let's hope I can come up with something this week, that you will be able to see.

A back view would do it! I did seriously consider that at one point, then I did a little searching and found this. Nothing to learn. Just upload a picture (drag'n drop) and dial in the age you want. It's completely free, no catch that I can see. There are lots of other tools as well. I haven't investigated any further so I don't know if free is limited to a certain number of operations. I didn't see any conditions displayed anywhere but I didn't look for them either.

I use it all the time to do the washing up but I don't let it cook!

This was a very rare exception because when I tried it myself it got too grotesque. The alternative of a picture search to turn up something that could, sort of, might have, been Steve, got completely frustrating, I found it impossible to choose.

A beauriful turn of phrase David. I have not heard that phrase before.
I agree. I happen to think AI is a galloping menace fed to us by idiot scientists. To be used with great care, if at all. Call me insane if you like.
