Challenge 1104: The stairway to nowhere
I was in Agadir, Morocco, recently, staying in a hotel with a rather curious feature. These stairs lead down to the swimming pool. So what is that landing for? How did this architectural oddity come about? I can't believe they dug the stairs out after having built the hallway. But I can think of no other explanation. Bizarre building practice aside, we have to work with what we've got. So can you devise a way for hotel guests to access that balcony? High res is here.
A note on taxonomy: You'll notice that this is Challenge 1104, whereas last week's was Challenge 1102. That's because the previous week was also Challenge 1102, and I'd misnumbered last week's. Just thought I'd explain. |

Re: Challenge 1104: The stairway to nowhere
Stairway to somewhere I couldn't think of anything clever for this so, as I do sometimes when that happens, I turned it into a personal technical challenge. In this case, architectural. It was much, much harder that I anticipated .............. and the end result, which doesn't bear too much close inspection, isn't about to sell many holiday packages! Hopefully I can find something less dull before the end of the week. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1104: The stairway to nowhere
To create my perspective I had to do quite a close analysis of this picture. There's more constructional oddity here than just the missing stair, Steve. Look at the tiling!! Either this building is seriously skewed or the tiler had far too much lunchtime Arak! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I know. Those stairs are at a crazy angle. Yes, Steve definitely had too much arak on this occasion. This is the Sables d'Or hotel (four star). You would think they could build better than that. |

Too many lines, shadows, and highlights... made my head hurt just thinking about it.

Michael I know you are good at research but how the hell did you discover that from just Agadir and an interior staircase. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David, I enlarged the plaque on the balcony and managed to make out d'Or I then searched for Agadir, hotel, and d'Or. Bingo! |

Well now that's ambitious!
I'm am, however, just a wee bit baffled by the hank of rope floating in the middle.

The Sables D"Or has undergone a major refit of the pool since Steve's visit.
Strangely one of the hardest parts wasn't all the foreground brouhaha with the slide, but opening the doors in the background. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Before guru Caplin points it out, I just realised I forgot to put a hint of reflection in the glass panel.

Some fun and interesting , innovative entries - well done. I tried a Mariner rebuild - if all else fails Steve just look at the one at the bottom of the stairs

The hotel's appalling wheelchair facilities (as evidenced by Ant's earlier photograph) have cause a storm of complaint! They have been obliged to install an entirely new system. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
