Contest 12: Building blocks
Here's an unremarkable office block I photographed last week. What I liked about it was the regular array of windows, some with blinds and some without: I figured that would make a great texture to construct other buildings from. So here's your challenge: use a section of this building to make your own architectural flight of fancy. You can build anything you want, as long as the perspective works! You'll find a high res version of the file here. I'd suggest you begin by cloning a double window over one of those singles at the top, and then using Perspective Crop to turn that section of the image into a tileable pattern. If you feel this process would just be tiresome, here is a version where I've already done that for you. Have fun with this one! ![]() |

Re: Contest 12: Agent ... Caplin .??? ..
Actually, I hesitated a second to send this one in. Partly since I've only used one element from the original image ( a window ), and partly since I've turned a good guy into a "bad guy". But, Ok ... ![]() Blame it on Matrix 1 running on the Teli tonight. Jiger. |

Re: Contest 12: More.. more.. more...
Well, the first one was a "quick-n'-dirty" 2-hour job. ( Had just landed a job in time for deadline and got euforic like... ) This is done with a bit more thought and time. Even went for trying to make Agent Caplin look a bit more grumpy. Now *that* was hard !! ![]() ![]() Ok, I'm done. No more Agent Caplin. Promise !! Jiger. |

Well as you said to turn it into a texture so I delved into my 3D app and conjured up this. "Caplin Square" rather like Eastender's Albert Square but not so miserable and more to do with Photoshop ![]() ![]() _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Haha lovely and topical, Russ. \edit suddenly it's all gone eerily quiet around here - is everybody waiting to make a mad rush of last minute entries, is everybody on holiday, or have the bodysnatching aliens succeeded in their evil plan of world domination? All will be revealed (I hope) Friday. Stay tuned and mind that giant plant pod by your bed you won't get a wink of sleep. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

I've been quite busy of late - even my 2 weeks off seemed to last all of 5 minutes - so my input has been less than normal ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Contest 12: Building blocks
Well, either most of you didn't like the topic or found it too difficult - or maybe the instructions weren't specific enough for you. But it's quality that counts, and these four entries show plenty of wit, skill and imagination. I'd never thought of myself as Mr Smith, but Jiger's entertaining entries do seem to bring out my sinister side. After the last couple of weeks I'm starting to feel like one of those paper dolls you used to get with different clothes you could put on them. Nice treatment of the background, like the way it bends around the side wall, and the blur on the distant buildings work well. But watch those perspectives! Damn, I really must do a chapter on perspective. Didn't realise it was so tricky. Incidentally, for those of you interested in Mr Smith lookalikes, there's a pretty bizarre page here. Typically charming entry from maiden once again. Love the lurching shape of the houses, it really adds a sense of dynamism, and the flare from that light is just perfect. Great use of shading as well, particularly on the houses! What 3D app did you use for this? I'm really intrigued to know what people here prefer. Myself, I hate 3D apps, but I think that's just personal prejudice. A truly brilliant entry from Russ this week. For those of you from the US and elsewhere, this relates to a recent news story in which a member of a pressure group called Fathers4Justice broke into Buckingham Palace dressed as Batman and sat on the balcony (it all had to do with demanding access to his children, bizarrely). Look at all the detail! The bricked up railings, the bricked archway (perfect!) with builders and ladders constructing more. There's Batman on the balcony, his Batmobile parked in the courtyard. And look out for Prince Philip with his shotgun in an upstairs window, and one of the Queen's corgis on the road outside. Where's Wally, anyone? Tweaknik, you always get in at the last minute, and you always produce stunning work. Here, you've mapped my brickwork and windows onto the Guggenheim so perfectly it's hard to believe it isn't real. (For those of you who want to see the untreated building, I've found the original photo here.) Look at the way those windows curve around the circular wall at the top! If you haven't tried this technique yourselves, it's really tricky. Adding the light flare and shadows on the windows themselves was one of those extra details that, again, makes this job work so perfectly. Excellent work! |

Steve, the 3D app I use is 3DStudio Max but I'm a bit of a novice on it. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |
