"Wayne shouldn't your snail be JCB yellow!"

I don't know, but I'm thinking it may need to be a bit smaller!

Good stuff BobbyJo and to the right address! It looks like a 25cm Snailum Giganticus to me.

'The postman always rings twice', the theme (title) taken from the old movies. Here's the scene where the snail man is about to ring the door bell.

Last one I promise! Just had to streamline the feelers and make the body smaller.

Bobby Jo, that's a great montage.

I just realized I forgot to add one shadow! And I didn't tell you that I have tried to reproduce the style of the old Daguerrotypes in my picture.

Re: Contest 111: Snail mail
Some very inspired work this week!

First to crawl out of the undergrowth and lay a slime trail on the ground (I think I'll have to stop these topic-related intros) was GKB, who's certainly beefed up the snail's legendary pace. A fantastic cartoony 3D modelled snail to go with it - note the little round puffs of smoke it's leaving behind. You don't think those two planes are a little close for comfort, Gordon? I mean, as an air traffic controller...

A funny, sad and surprisingly touching entry from Glen, whose snail is just about to get his belly burnt. Ouch! Still, if he's got that far, he must have asbestos skin! A well turned corner, there.

Aesop revisited: tank172 has pulled the hare out of the equation, and has the tortoise racing against the snail. Could be rather a dull race, were it not for the fact that both of them seem to be souped up with additional hardware. And I thought steroids were bad enough! We really need some shadows here to set them on the ground, though.

A great gag from dave.cox, with a snail that's so well integrated into the picture it's hardly visible. A lot of energy in there, though!

A sense of drama in James's post - where ever did you find that background? We really need a shadow beneath that snail, though. There's a faint one behind it, but it needs some underneath to ground it properly. A really great second entry: the glass effect on the snail inside the bottle is fantastic. I'd have made the neck a little sharper - the reflection there should completely obscure the snail - and a little distortion through the thick part of the neck would have helped greatly. But overall this is a well constructed, detailed piece of work. Well done!

Some fine jewellery from michael sinclair, if perhaps a little slimy on the skin. A great metallic effect! Given the colour of the original photo, those snails look a little green to me, though.

Excellent distortion from Storm: turning the angle of that snail around has been expertly achieved. Perfect shadow matching, and the slime trail is perfect. Good old Plastic Wrap, eh?

Much as I like both escargots and sushi, Neal's entry has put me right off! The shadow is perfect, and that's the key to making so many montages work. Nice one!

Always good to see a new member: Ben Mills' slimeburger is a great first entry! When duplicating elements within a montage, though, I find it always helps the realism to distort one so they don't look identical. In this case, simply bending the antennae to different angles would have done the trick. Welcome to the forum, Ben!

A fantastic entry from Deborah Morley: there's a real sense of drama here, helped greatly by the low angle and strong perspective in the original photo. Excellent work, Deborah!

A charming entry from j.harvatt, whose snail shell is as festooned with destination stickers as the suitcase is. Those labels are beautifully wrapped around the shell, and the out of focus background really enhances the sense of perspective. Nice one!

Eggbox has given us a real feeling of speed, with just the right amount of motion blur. Some fantastic details, too: the reworking of the Post Office logo with the new lettering, and above all the way the antennae are sloped back on the head. I really like this one.

Another zippy entry, this time from Wayne: this one's really tearing along at speed. Great elongation, and subtle use of Motion Blur. And the second entry does streamline it better, certainly.

Painstaking and accurate work from Tom: that snail has been perfectly distorted to fit the jar, and the whole effect is helped greatly by the distorted background line. This is a textbok example of how to put things in jars! Fantastic.

Lots of good elements from Johanna, with plenty of great ideas. For added realism, I'd suggest a couple of minor changes: first, place the pieces of paper at angles to make them look more haphazardly attached; and add some shading to the paper! Great tape and drawing pins, and a neatly eaten piece of paper at the bottom. Enjoying your work, Johanna!

A neat idea from BobbyJo, and like Ted I do like the address! I'd have curved the envelope the other way, though, to make it look more like it's curling into the letterbox.

An interesting daguerrotype from Whaler, especially in the second entry - to complete the effect, I'd have given the image a more ragged edge, though. Are the shadows a bit too crisp and dark?

A very convincing entry from Sophie, helped greatly by the sensitive addition of the shail's shadow. It's perhaps a little too soft, and it does need to appear a touch higher where it crosses that yellow pylon. Very close, though!

Raffy has successfully crossed a snail, a cat and a roadrunner - heavens! Isn't there a Nobel prize in that achievement? A very entertaining animation, with good timing and a well planned loop. I am enjoying these!

A very well crafted piece of work from vibeke, who has managed to fit the snail into that landscape perfectly - matching both the angle of the ground and the boy sitting on its back. Strange things, indeed! Wonder if Tinkerbell has anything to do with it?

A lot of detailed, hand drawn elements from char, and a very good cartoon feel to the snails. I love the satellite dish, the mailboxes, and the huge golf ball to give us a sense of scale - and, of course, the helmet on the nearest snail. Excellent!

Great work, everyone. So many entertaining entries!

Re: Contest 111: Snail mail
Thanks for the comments Steve! Yeah, I liked the idea of the "prelude" race. Unfortunately, I had only 15 minutes left on my lunch break to make it happen! I didn't even have time to apply the original snail shell in the image you posted for the challenge! I'll revise an repost along with the comments you noted for me.

Thanks again!

Thanks Steve, I had fun looking for something to hide the fact that I had no foot on the boy, adding the duck seemed to have worked and tinkerbell was a last minute inspiration.
