Challenge 313: Friday the 13th
(On behalf of Steve)

Well, it's Friday 13th - an unlucky day, for some. Personally, I've never been bothered by superstitions, except that I do go out of my way to walk under ladders.

Here's an exterior view of a house (incidentally, the house owned by the friends I'll be staying with in France by the time you read this). How many superstitions can you fit into this scene? If you run out of black cats and spilled salt, feel free to make up your own…

High res is here.

Thanks Anna
The animation on your image is superb. It must have taken hours. You've just reminded me that I forgot to use the horseshoe image I saved!

Anna,
I have to confess that it's not quite recognized by the Council of Accepted
Superstitions, but I'll be lobbying for it throughout the year.

My mother was very superstitions but... while she sat beside a roaring log fire, she used to send my father out into the cold dark night to bow to the new moon three times while turning money over in his pocket (never look at a new moon through glass)! One of her wicked brothers made up a superstition to tease her - a bird feather lying on the ground must be stuck upright in the earth or else...! We lived near a rookery!

Re: Challenge 313: Friday the 13th
So happy to be taking part this week.

Well done Nick! First up and a very tricky looking broken glass effect.

Entertaining as always Anna. Only 2 hours? Amazing. Quite a few superstitions in there that I don't recognise but please don't tell me. It's bad enough dealing with the ones that I know!

Love the flying goldfish Vibeke. What is the empty gift box about and there are a few plants outside doors, is that Yew (as opposed to non-U?)

I had to look up the chimney sweep reference Deb, is it lucky for a bride? Love the owl and all the other symbols blended in.

Hope you are having a lovely computer-free holiday Steve.

Some really great entries. I've had visitors from the UK for a week, so have not had the time, but am enjoying looking at what everyone has done. Good work all.

Thanks, the box isn't empty, it has got a knife in it, supposed to be bad luck giving a knife, and the plants are rosemary, good luck to have them by the front door.
Goldfish in the pond bring good luck
Goldfish in the house bring bad luck
not sure what one in a bowl outside does, but I thought it was cute.

Re: Challenge 313: Friday the 13th
I enjoyed your superstitions this week - but whether they're all 'real' or made-up, I have no idea.

Nick Curtain gives us a man walking under a ladder, a number 13, and a black cat - and I like the opened umbrella visible through the door. An excellent broken glass effect, especially with the refraction - or is that a mirror?

A huge range of additions to tooquilos's scene, including many old ones (the spilled salt, the horseshoe, the four-leafed clover) and several I don't recognise: the rocking chair? The cat in a circle? The guinea pig? Fantastic detail. And the animated version, showing the scene being created, is wonderful - and a perfect choice of soundtrack!

OK... so brewell has given us three men in red shoes with wine bottles on their heads and holding sunflowers, jumping over an armadillo. Well, that's a new one on me, Bruce, but fortunately I don't expect it's an occurrence that happens all that often!

I like the jaunty man walking underneath vibeke's ladder. Again, there are supertitions here that are new to me: the tree? The box of paper? The apple? And there's something at the back that looks like a spilled barrel of potatoes, but I assume I'm misreading it... interesting!

A hugely dramatic black cat from LonnieK - and I do like the fact that the shadow is so much more dramatic than the cat itself. An interesting shadowy figure in the doorway, too.

Trees in pots again, this time from Deborah Morley - so that must be a real superstition after all. New to me, though, as is the owl... and is there one about a policeman in a bowler hat and moustache carrying a tin bucket???

I like Sophie's 666 number sign - and the other additions, including seeing the moon through glass. Watch that shadow on your ladder, though - it should go along the ground before going up the wall.

Interesting work all round. If I were the superstitious kind, I'd certainly have a lot more to worry about after this week!

Thanks Steve
There is also a salt cellar, just in front of the cat. I wanted to include a broken mirror somewhere, so thought why not depict the whole scene reflected in one.

Thank you Steve! Hope you had a lovely time away. I was only familiar with a few but thanks to Google and Wikipedia it opened up an entire new world of superstitions!

Broken clock brings bad luck

Owl is bad luck

Kitchen Witch (on the window) brings good luck

Rosemary growing by front door brings good luck

Ivy growing on wall is good luck

7th son of the 7th son possess special powers/gifts

Shoes on table brings bad luck

Lucky Kitty is used in Asian culture .. it supposedly brings good fortune

An empty rocking chair must never rock – it predicts death

Standing inside a drawn circle protects from evil spirits

A frog entering a house is good luck

It’s a rabbit by the way lol and careful inspection reveals it has a prosthetic leg! (Rabbits foot)

Sparrows bring good fortune

Sorry to have missed the prosthetic leg on the rabbit! (Now there's a phrase you don't see very often.)
