Challenge 494: The eagle
I photographed this eagle on the streets of Madeira a few months ago (it was chained to someone's wrist at the time). I was struck by the rather human surprised expression on its face.

Is there enough texture here to rebuild an entire eagle? It's not an easy task, but it may be possible.

Alternatively, if that's too daunting, graft the eagle's head onto another body. But I will be looking for a perfect fit!

High res is here.

Oops! sorry about that.

Here is my submission. I know the background is from a recent Friday challenge, but it looked like prime gryphon habitat

Actually, I wasn't thinking of Harry Potter when I decided to make a gryphon. The eagle appears to be a year-old juvenile white-tailed sea eagle. When I was searching for a suitable body to put the head on, "Big Bang Theory" was playing on the TV in the other room. It was the episode where Sheldon relates how he hates birthdays because when he was turning 8 years old, he wanted his parents to give him lion semen and an eagle egg because he wanted to create a gryphon to replace the family cat which had recently met it's demise.

What Sheldon failed to realize was that gryphons make terrible pets. First off, they have a voracious appetite due to their high metabolism which they need in order to fly. Second, they have high exercise requirements. Most people don't have the acreage nor the financial wherewithal to build an aviary of sufficient size and strength to contain a gryphon. And then there's the need to provide gryphons with mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming destructive. A bored gryphon can create considerable havoc due to their large size. All in all a poor choice of pet for anyone let alone an eight-year-old boy.
