Challenge 496: The rear window
This is the view from the window of our hotel room in Paris. It's all quiet enough during the day, but of course it really comes to life at night... or does it? What sort of French farce might be played out against this backdrop? High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 496: The rear window
Hello, world! Been following the forum for a while and read the book(s) so I decided to submit my attempt at portraying a night in Paris for my first Challenge. Not something a tourist would like to see through his bedroom window though ![]() ![]() |

Welcome MrB, Good start. Word of warning, this can become very addictive. I believe free running started in France (free runners by day and cat burglars by night). ![]() |

Re: Challenge 496: The rear window
In January I received from Adobe your own tutorial, Steve, “Turn day into night”. I worked it out without any problems. (Except: In the PhotoshopCC-programm in French it is necessary to activate in the color range window “invert”.) For your day-night challenge I tried to use this new way – without any success! Why? The help was only your PhotoshopCC-book page 200. ![]() |

Is that the same hotel room you stayed in when you set the 1st day for night challenge? ![]() |

Re: Challenge 496: The rear window
I didn't have the time to put in on this one. I had surgery on Tuesday and I started a new job on Wednesday. It's not my best effort. Oh, and if I knew how to add music to it, I'm sure it wouldn't be to Steve's taste, or mine for that matter. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 496: The rear window
The first entry this week was from new member mrB - a great night-time tint there, and a good-looking spotlight effect on the wall. I like the fact that lower floors are lit from a light show below. The lit windows are sell selected, but could be brighter for more impact. Welcome to the forum! Some excellent free running - or parkour, as they call it in France - from Ant Snell. A lot of action here, and I'm especially impressed by the tightrope walker. The man jumping right next to him is a bit of a distraction: I'd make him smaller, so he's a little further away. And is that a touch too much glow around the windows? Plenty of action from Frank, both silhouette and fully lit: I was especially amused by the couple in the top flat, with her lover hanging off the balcony. Also, I like the way the scene inside the room to the left is continuous across two windows - very convincing! Very fine work, Frank. A very funny entry from brewell, entitled Karl Wallenda's first time out - and if you study the beautifully perspective-matched lines of washing you'll see a baby hanging from one of them. The title refers to The Flying Wallendas, a troupe of tightrope walkers led by patriarch Karl. A perfect job, Bruce. Brilliant. A fun-packed entry from Linda Eckert, more collage than realism, with activity in every window: a wine cellar, a man showering, a jazz band, and much more. I like the graffiti artist bottom right. And as for your question: the technique using the Replace Color dialog doesn't work for every image! I photographed that one on the Adobe website specifically for the tutorial. And yes, sometimes you will have to check the 'invert' box; the dialog remembers what you did last time, and sets itself the same way. Only a few windows lit in Garfield72's entry, but there's plenty of action here with a great party scene. Are those people near the window much too big for the room, though? I like the screaming man in the apartment below. An intriguing image from tooquilos: plenty of beautifully lit windows, but the top half is obscured by what appears to be an old and much patched window frame. What on earth can it be about? Have to watch the animated version to find out... and it's a beautiful piece of work, with loads of action going on behind those blinds. Splendid! Just one question: why do the windows slide up, rather than opening like windows? Now that would have been a challenge! Everyone in joeysala's entry is watching everyone else - so many nosy neighbours! I like the way some of the windows have been opened here. Perhaps a few should be more lit up, as well? Very complete work from Deborah Morley, with a couple of lit windows - but the whole scene is viewed from the inside of a hotel room, with a splendid reflection on the glass, both of the man looking out and a suggestion of the inside of the room. Excellent work. And no, as it happens this is a different hotel room! A very well lit entry from srawland, despite not having enough time for it - but those rush jobs are often the most compelling. I like the subtlety here: the man banging the broom on the floor, and the one clutching his head at the bottom, both suggest noisy goings-on in the apartment between them. I probably agree about the music. A good entry! A rather touching image from Mariner, with a tim Burton style wedding scene going on in the moonlight. Good reflections - and very good lighting throughout. |
