Challenge 536: Make 2015 beautiful
A wide open Challenge this week, to celebrate the new year: take this setting of 2015 and make it into something beautiful. Quite how you achieve that is up to you.

I've saved the high res file as a psd with a clipping path for those of you who want to experiment with 3D - text works much better from paths than it does from pixels.

High res is here.

As is traditional at this time of year, I don't look at my computer between Christmas and New Year. So you've got two weeks for this one - I'll be writing this up on 2nd of January.

Is that font 'Baskerville'?

Well spotted! Yes, it is Baskerville Bold, but I've edited it to remove the dropped tail of the 2 which would have made it difficult to place on a flat surface.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas.
That was a first: as you had saved it as a psd file as soon as I clicked on the link it downloaded and opened it in photoshop!

Has to be a quick one this week. Might get to do something better later.

Unfortunately this one was just too big to fit on the 4th plinth!

What better way to see in the New Year than on a Caribbean beach. Slight panic for a while but eventually got Photoshop working again. Happy New Year everyone.

Even though the man looks a little like Putin and the woman clearly is not appropriately dressed for a walk in the woods, don't over-think it.

HAPPY NEW FROM INGRID AND DAVID MAC
This challenge provoked me into finally getting to grips with a new trompe l'oeil which has been floating about in my head and on my sketch pad for a while now. I was very worried I wouldn't make the deadline for the challenge as an image like this would normally be done over several weeks ..... but a quiet Christmas and lots of midnight oil later here it is: a full fledged New Year Illusion card from the Macdonalds.

Since the image is a little out of the usual a word or two of explanation might interest some of you.

The intention here is more hyper real illustration than photography. Aside from Ingrid, myself and the water no photography was involved. The geometry, 3D Baskerville and the main structural elements were constructed initially in 3D in the wonderfully fast and intuitive Trimble Sketchup and exported in 2D to multiple photoshop layers. (The modelling is done in isometric parallel projection with no vanishing points. You could not create this figure with perspective as it would contain nine contradictory vanishing points and the surface would become curved).

Since the geometry has rotational symmetry only one third was modelled. This was duplicated and rotated and the false joins created in Photoshop. This has to be done in 2D because you can't use 3D to model something which cannot actually exist in true 3D space!

Texturing and lighting were done entirely in 2D in Photoshop. The two figures were posed and lit expressly for their final placement after the creation of the main image.

The impossible typeface top left is also my own creation from several years back. Composed on many long sleepless night flights between Brussels and Mumbai. Each letter is composed of a fully scaleable Illustrator vector group.

Lots of work!! But I had a really good time doing this .......

Do view this full size. There's lots of detail. Click once to go the larger image and then click again for 100%.

Looking forward to a new year of fresh challenges. Thank you Steve for the last year. It's been such good fun.

Not excited about this one, but rather lacking in time, with lots of Christmas celebrations, and off on a trip South tomorrow. Heading for the Southern most part of New Zealand, Stewart Island.
This contest has set me up for a New Years resolution,

Re: Challenge 536: Make 2015 beautiful
Just realised that, after all my rush to meet the Friday deadline, I didn't read Steve's post properly and had until the 2nd ......

DUH!!!!

Oh well .... look on the positive side ....... we needed it before years end anyway to get it sent out in time.

A wonderful New Year to you all.

Wow, Anna!

That really is beautiful, and I had to laugh when I read your resolution about the head-banging music.
