Challenge 539: Graffiti art
I walked past this graffiti artist last week. He's got a huge array of spray cans laid out on the table in front of him, and has started filling in the detail on the building - but you can see where he's sketched out animals on the rest of the space. Can you help him finish the job? High res is here.  |

Her Majesty is not amused. 
Displacement map, then Multiply, and then reduced opacity plus other fiddles. Displacement maps work better on curved contour edges like rock faces or flags. I have carried over the original guy and his paint, so I'm on topic...yeah!

Tooquilos I know we don't all approve of taggers .... but that's some pretty serious retribution in your video.

LOL I didn’t actually mean it as retribution but now that you mention it I can see what you mean!! It was more of a juxtaposition of reality and fantasy lol but I think the message got lost in amongst the fumes haha It was Julian’s work that gave me the original idea to begin with. Julian's perspective is a very particular form called anamorphosis - it has a very long history with examples from many centuries ago. A tagger is the unwanted side of graffiti. People who simply 'tag' their names or pseudonyms anywhere and everywhere. Although I believe, that with the growing acceptance of good graffiti as an art form, the word tagger is losing some of its pejorative quality. Here's another interesting form of graffiti. It's called reverse graffiti. This is certainly not my best effort. My only hope is that Steve will run another Challenge amnesty so I can redeem myself. Some people just don't appreciate art.  _________________ I'm still learning. |

First to enter this week was DavidMac, with an ingenious absent graffiti artist - note the hand-painted Gone to lunch sign on the table. Very nicely achieved, and flawlessly removed. I think I might have a stalker... not content with plastering my mug on the HotChiPs banner, Born2Run has sprayed me all over the wall. Excellent clean-up job removing the original graffiti, though, and I do like the way you've worked around the recessed windows. Great choice of font, but do watch your saturation: that red is just too bright for reality. An extravagant entry from michael sinclair, with the graffiti painter (and his materials) now moving on to Buckingham Palace. The graffiti looks terrific, but I'd prefer it if we could see some areas that aren't quite finished. It's a little hard to see the Displacement Map effect, but I appreciate the effort. A novel approach from Darren - and a cute rendering of those monkeys. Just as long as the elephant doesn't inhale... I really like these trompe l'oeil paintings, and tooquilos's entry fits the yawning cavern perfectly onto that wall. A great use of the plain brick, too, and I like the decorated houses next door. Great movement of the man in the animated version, even if his legs to slide around rather... but the scene of him falling into his own chasm is splendid. Terrific splashes! Beautiful work from Linda Eckert, with Mediterranean scenes replacing the jungle. The effect is just right, with the paintings really looking as if they're right on the wall... and I like the added cat and car. Not only has Ant Snell been the only one so far to actually complete the painting, he's also allowed nature to take over - with monkeys and parrots, and dry cracked earth with a few shoots breaking through. Very effective. I like the way you've brought the man to the foreground so he can admire his own work. A clever work in progress from Deborah Morley: note the smoothed texture on the large monkey, and the same style applied to the other two. Also, I like the fact that you've moved the painter to a different location. Neat. A great spray can effect from Vibeke, with an exuberant splash of paint out of the wall and onto the ground in front. Thoughtfully achieved, and very much in the original style. Partial completion from Garfield72, with the monkeys fully coloured in but the background still to go. Perhaps the artist should have moved to a different location? A splash of colour from Emy, with a great fantasy tree in the background - I really like those floating orange things, whatever they may be. Top work. I was amused by srawland's entry, showing a group of people painting over the graffiti with plain white. A great idea, but you do need to keep some of the original contours of the building! _________ Hugely inventive work this week. A real pleasure. |
