Challenge 542: The courtroom
I visited the Suffolk town of Woodbridge last weekend, and was struck by the elegant Shire Hall. Built in 1575, the ground floor housed a corn market, while the upper floor was used for "judicial purposes" - accessed by two sets of outdoor steps at either end.

What interested me most of all, though, was the two barred rooms on the ground floor. Today they're been rather incongruously used for the storage of traffic cones, but back in the 16th century... who knows what nefarious villains these bars might have restrained?

Work your magic, please, and strip away the centuries.

High res is here.

(fyi:Deviation comment: interesting aside on Woodbridge, fyi:we designed and installed our first software controlled exchange (System-X) in UK where it went live as a first in Woodbridge for BT and UK. A big step in start of evolution of national/international software control for digital telecoms!. (funny for me at the time thinking of my program busy stetting up 10^n calls for local subscribers. Hello Woodbridge! I did not know you existed before) ).

Moved back only a small way to 16C . .. more later on this FC hopefully...

Surgeon Checking That Justice has Been Served
This is a lot later than 16th century - Early 19th more likely. However the last public hanging in England was in 1868 so this is quite within the bounds of plausibility ….. although it is highly unlikely that Woodbridge would ever have been the scene of so grisly a spectacle.

Needs viewing full size because of the gravure. Lot of fun finding all the figures and creating a scene from them. Took more time than I intended.

Re: Challenge 542: The courtroom
The final stand around the Woodbridge Hall of the Royalists or is it the Roundheads (does it matter)

NB My first entry now has a high-res image of Woodbridge Shire Hall.

For non-Brits the "die in vain" quote is from the late great Tony Hancock - the other is a reference to the fact that when questioned on the Letterman show our esteemed PM did not know what "Magna Carta" is in English

Re: Challenge 542: The courtroom
I almost forgot to upload this.

I got the three images of the people from various Renaissance Faire images. It always strikes me how clean the people are there. I'm fairly certain that people didn't bathe as often nor wash their clothing frequently if at all. Maybe that can be the subject of a future Friday Challenge. Make these Renaissance Faire players look period.

Re: Challenge 542: The courtroom
A rather magnificent piece of royal tomfoolery from michael sinclair kicked off this week's entries, with much bowing and scraping. Much better for the new shire hall, certainly. But who's the monarch? He looks decidedly French to me. Much death and destruction in the second entry, although the building does seem to have come through the battle remarkably unscathed.

A splendid view of a broken-down building from Emy, with boarded up doorways and a lot of graffiti. I'd suggest writing the graffiti by hand, though, as repeated identical letters always look typed rather than written - especially a word like "horror" with three Rs in it! I like the reflections in the windows on the side buildings.

A beautifully lit scene from tooquilos, with an almost mystical mist and a glimpse of gallows at the side. A salutory tale in the animated version: I especially like the cell scene in which the woman moves towards the camera. Great flames and smoke throughout, and what a terrific transformation of Miss Stake herself! I also particularly enjoyed the Carl Orff soundtrack.

Extraordinary work from DavidMac, who has combined 19th century engravings with a very neatly engraved version of the original image. And it's all here, from sickness to the gallows. A splendid match, David: what filters did you use on the background to get this look?

A neat cartoon version from shaneworth71, who has incorporated Wacky Races characters Dastardly and Muttley into the scene. A very convincing effect, but I'm not sure why you didn't carry it through into the background as well.

A rainy day from Linda Eckert, with a remarkably cheerful hotel doorman braving the elements to welcome his guests. A great set of rainy accessories, from umbrella-wielding women to a wet dog: I really like the umbrella over the statue, a very clever touch. And the neatly-opened cupboard under the stairs is a great place to store umbrellas!

A topical image from Josephine Harvatt, celebrating the lack of knowledge of our current Prime Minister. Can’t blame him, poor chap, if only he'd gone to a traditional school where Latin was still taught... oh, hang on a minute...

A nicely scratched sepia image from Garfield72, with a new ground and a prisoner lurking in the cell. I like the added bale of straw, but its shadow is just too strong; it makes it stand out too much.

Very appropriate characters from Deborah Morley, who seem oblivious to the incarcerated prisoner behind them. Should be perhaps be reaching out through the bars? I like the added barrels and cart, which give it a lot of texture.

A good cast of characters from srawland, particularly the two sitting neatly on the steps. I like the cat, too, but I'm not sure about the amount of blur on the man in the foreground - although I suppose cameras were a lot slower in the 17th century. Best of all is the tunnel inside the barred doorway - a very fine addition.

There's an illustrated look to Darren's entry, with a curiously dark man sitting on the steps in front of a new front door. I like the way the railings have been removed from the staircase, which gives it a more authentic look. But I'm not sure the guillotine made it across the channel!

Entertaining entries this week. Surprised no-one opened the big doors, though.
