Challenge 757: Darwin's octopus
Another exhibit from the Cambridge Museum of Zoology, this one's a pickled octopus that was brought back by Charles Darwin from the voyage on the Beagle that inspired his theory of evolution.

It looks a little lonely all by itself. Can you provide it with some suitable companions?

High res is here.

Re: Challenge 757: Darwin's octopus
Looks like he needs a lot more than companionship poor thing!! That's seriously sad and gruesome!

Next week I take delivery of a fast new high end iMac. Despite many bandaids and transplants over the years my venerable eleven year old MacPro can no longer handle the newer OS's and Apps. I couldn't test CC19 properly, when I tried it a few months back, because it ran so unhappily with significant brush lags and other problems. I am also working some very large and complex resource hungry images which are starting to bring the poor machine to it's knees.

Looking forward to the new 5K Retina 27" screen but I am really going to miss my big old 32" Apple cinema display which had so much room for panels and stuff outside the main image - there's no way I can afford to replace that as well! But I'll still be working dual screen with another ancient ten year old LCD display, so I can drag more panels onto that than I do now and keep the new display for as much image area as possible.

The change over is going to be a fairly massive operation, with huge data transfers, updates and re-registrations after which the old machine will be set up for my wife.

So next week promises to be very busy. Not sure if there will a chance for an entry or not. No quickies spring to mind at the moment.

But I'll be watching you ............

I think you will be very happy with your new iMac, David. Good luck with the installation.

Well an expedient solution for a quickie has sprung to mind ....... it's called cheating. The headmaster must decide if it warrants appropriate disciplinary action or removal.

I created this image in 2007 for another online fun challenge at graphics.com - since closed down. It was entered under the title "Another day at the castle for Frank and Igor". Some of you will have seen it on my website. It owes rather more to Mel Brookes than Mary Shelley.

In its original incarnation the bottle contained a human brain .........

............ now it contains a lonely octopus in desperate need of re-incarnation.

I remember this challenge. If memory serves me correctly, you submitted an image with monks. A stunning piece of art.

Enjoy the system rebuild David. Just in time for a Darwin upgrade. Hi everybody. Still watching from the sidelines.

Re: Challenge 757: Darwin's octopus
Forgive me Ant I am going to have a little bit of fun at your expense here.

TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION.

This image contains perspective anomalies ……….. or does it?

The horizon is clearly established in the background. However the convergence of the table is to a point way above this.

There are a number of possibilities …………

1) Incompetence on the part of the creator.

2) The camera is fixed relative to the the table top. All of the foreground is on a fishing boat. By reason of the motion of the sea the boat is tilted towards us which in turn tilts the camera up relative to the horizon dropping it lower than if the camera were level.

3) The camera is fixed relative the horizon and the tilting of the boat towards us means the table top is effectively sloping up relative to camera thus creating its own quite different vanishing point.

On the basis of long experience of Mr Snell’s work we may hopefully safely dismiss option 1 entirely,

Leaving just 2 & 3.

So which is correct?

………… or are are they both equally viable?

To be honest David, it was probably more of option 1, but here is the bigger picture to support your theory. I am never one to turn down a good excuse.
