Challenge 829: Foxing about
I encountered this stuffed fox at a flea market in France this summer. (I didn't buy it - largely because I'd splashed out 10 euros on a better fox half an hour earlier). The remains of the pheasant in its mouth are sadly dilapidated.

Given that the tattered remains of Covid-constricted Halloween are almost upon us, you give this critter a better catch and a more spooky setting?

High res is here.

One for you Anna.

Just foxing about, I suppose that's what we are all doing!

Just finished trying to extract this furry fellow his very similar background. A mini challenge all on its own!!

Now I am in full grumpy mode ...... getting rid of that damn pheasant has just about finished me.

..... and that's really nice Ben! Like the mood.

Lovely Ben. Nicely toned, equally saturated and rich in color. The fox blends in very nicely!

Michael will doubtless say I am self denigrating again but what I really wanted was to turn the fox into Boris. After several hours of struggling I hadn't succeeded in producing anything even remotely satisfactory so have left Foxy as he is.

Re: Challenge 829: Foxing about
This is slightly off topic except that it relates to my earlier comment that extracting the fox was a mini challenge on its own. This afternoon I started playing with PS 2021 for the first time. The new select and mask tools did the the job in just a couple of minutes ......... and better than I had managed.

Not sure if that's marvellous or depressing .....

David, I too have started Photoshop CC 21.2.4 from CS6 in the last two days, and I'm over the moon with it. The CC 21 version come with the new Sensai selection engine--Select Subject-- (no jagged edges).

I believe Refine Edges is now called Select and Mask; moreover, version CC 22 Update (which I can't have on account that I'm on Windows 7 and not Windows 10) comes with an additional parameter in Refine Edges/Select and Mask whereby you can select colour or object and get Refine Hair in the menu bar when that parameter is selected.

Here is my first attempt at doing an animal's selection and fur from a complex background:

Re: Challenge 829: Foxing about
Yes on Mac OS I have the colour and object possibilities. When first adobe began these sophisticated selection engines I was actually a bit miffed at the idea dumb software could do it better than me. I was, quite frankly, a bit resistant. But this latest version is so much better that to go on feeling like that would be a just too ostrich like ....

If you have come to CC 2021 from CS6 your going to need quite a long learning curve. There's a stunning amount of new stuff in that leap!

Good luck!

Re: Challenge 829: Foxing about
Damn, that's a nice cut out...apart from the paws...but what about the subject fox. Surely that's classed as a complex background. What does that look like on a black back ground? If the edge is as refined as what you are showing, then that is a step in the right direction!

I personally, have never been satisfied with an auto cut out without tweaks.

Re: Challenge 829: Foxing about
Yet another solid two days work doing this; I'm indebted To Steve for providing his challenge last Friday, as It has clearly given me the opportunity to be super-creative in producing an alternative fox.

Updated for fringing on legs

The animation is five seconds per frame

I was lucky to find only one good image of an alternative Fox head which took some very careful blending and adjustments etc.

And yes, I have provided paws

NB by clicking on the image should produce a much larger detailed picture.

HA, clever sign David.

Gee Loyd, you're really quick with your clips. Nice. Is that Peter Sellers..."Birdie, num, num!"

Michael, good job. What a stunning combination.
