Challenge 868: Close the car
A rather more technical challenge for you this week. I visited Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk last weekend, where there happened to be a display of vintage cars. I was rather taken with this racy model, even though I suspect it's actually a modern replica. Your task: close the bonnet/hood, and remove the sign. What you do with the car after that is up to you. I know this is firmly in Mariner territory, but I'd urge even Michael Sinclair to give it a go as a useful exercise, before you reach for the explosives. High res is here. ![]() |

To save you all a little time, it's a Morgan Plus Six (2019). |

But of course, none of you would dream of patching it from another photograph. Your task is to rebuild it using only what’s in this photo. |

How mean is that? Tell us, Steve, did you wait around long enough to take a photo with the bonnet closed? If so, will we have the big Reveal at the end of the show? |

I did not. It’s entirely up to you whether it looks right. |

An open challenge to the site owner: you prove to us that it can be done by doing it yourself and show us at the end of next week ![]() |

Re: Challenge 864: Storming the embassy
Challenge accepted! I only had half an hour before I have to go out but here's a proof of concept. Not perfect but you get the idea. I've left the background intact because i didn't have time to cut the car out. ![]() |

"But of course, none of you would dream of patching it from another photograph. Your task is to rebuild it using only what’s in this photo." WRONG! ![]() ![]() Too late Steve. By the time I had read this I had already done it! I was tempted to accuse you of mild sadism anyway because this one is quite a lot harder than it looks at first sight. Having read the above I am now tempted to reinforce that accusation. ![]() I can assure you all that borrowing from other cars (especially with this white colour) is really not as easy as one might think. In my defence I did not cut the car out and put it elsewhere which is the other obvious way of making life simpler. I chose to restore the missing background. That's quite a fun little challenge on its own. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 868: Close the car
Well you've ALL got it wrong. It has THREE windscreen wipers and two ventilation grills. You need to change the colour of the car to bring out the grills. And, people, I think there are a couple of multimeters parked behind the middle wiper. Surely they need to go. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 868: Close the car
I have found two wipers, three wipers, opposed wipers and same direction wipers. Strapped bonnet and unstrapped bonnet. Hard top and soft top. Black trim and chrome trim. Alloy wheel and wire wheels. There seems to be a huge number of variations from one owner to another. Not sure how much this reflects the owners/restorers or original manufacture. I think there's a certain freedom here. I took the 'multimeters' to be a bunch of leaflets waiting to be taken. I was so exhausted from tiny fiddly stuff by then I decided to leave them. They would be better gone. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A tough challenge to say the least and well done Gordon for adding the louvres to the top of the Morgan's bonnet. If I had a spare week I'd attempt this, but I'm off to a classic and sports show in Suffolk tomorrow with the old cat and may see some Morgans there. Nick |

Louvres. Thanks, Nick , I just learned a new word there. Well done, Gordon, you Closed Down the Car. I shall steal your louvres idea for my own car. Hope you don't mind. |

Re: Challenge 868: Close the car
Interesting...David very good! Gordon, you've taken Steve's method by comparison...which leads me on to say that the issue will be one of recreating the "gloss and reflection" in a convincing way, and I again ask Steve to recreate all of this by the end of next week. ![]() Nick you're taking the "old cat" off to Suffolk! Won't "Tiddles" find that a bit of strain? ![]() |
