Challenge 912: Polish my lamp
Ha! Fooled you into thinking this was going to be about Aladdin! No, this week's Challenge is a technical one. I photographed this wall in Krakow, Poland, a couple of weeks ago. I was struck by how neatly the shadow of the lamp filled the wall. Of course in this version, I've removed the shadow by photographing the same view the following day when the sun was round the other side, and patching the two together. Can you recreate the original scene? The shadows of the people should give you a clue to the length and angle required. Of course most of you will ignore these instructions and just do your own thing, but I'll post the original next Friday anyway. High res is here.  |

I haven't been around much lately as I am working on a huge and complex image for Ingrid. This, however, intrigued me. It's very tricky because of the very oblique angle of the sun relative to the wall. However improbable it might look I am going to gamble that it would be something like this, but in reality much sharper. I have a suspicion that whatever the result it will be unexpected ........ which is why, I suspect, Steve has set us the challenge.

All you 3D experts can model this lamp perpendicular to a flat white surface and light it with an infinite point source to plot a shadow you can then render and add to the image. Good one David. I imagine I've gone a bit long and my frame shadow is too heavy but that's all the time i've got this week.  _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Here's the MKII version. Slightly different. No more accurate, I suspect, but cleaner.

Towards the bottom, right small window, left of the drainpipe is a black smudge and evidence of cloning. I was wondering if Steve purposely left it there as a hint? But then I found it inconceivable a shadow should be that long. So let's see what Friday reveals

Now that's an observant and clever thought Anna. But like you I am doubtful. There is a lot of smudged and patched paintwork so it's hard to judge what might be cloned and what might be patched decorations. I based my guess on the other shadows. Particularly the small pipe on the bottom left and the moulding just to the left of the lamp. I can't guarantee entering every challenge on account of health issues, but I have had a chance today.
Nice work David: the money seems to be on you as you're the most able for this kind of thing. Michael, I love it! It took me three and half hours to remove all the people: very fiddly and time-consuming, so I know it would have been the same for you.

That lamp is big; approximately 6 ft. Maybe 2 ft wide. That means it's about 5 ft from the wall. The angle of the right person's shadow is only about 5 degrees off parallel to the wall and he's only about 4 ft from the wall. That's good reasoning Dennis, I think it's possible that we may have underestimated there. But on the other hand there are things on the wall casting shadows (like the pipe and the mouldings) and their shadows appear to be about two to two and half times their apparent depth from the wall. I am very unsure about this one but Steve has given us another indirect clue: "I was struck by how neatly the shadow of the lamp filled the wall.". Dennis and Anna both did night versions of this. I decided that would be an interesting thing to try. My version is closer to Dennis but lighter and less confined.
