Challenge 966: Hand ambulance
This week's curiosity comes courtesy of the charming March & District Museum, which is in the very best tradition of collections of local history.

My favourite object in the museum is this extraordinary distance clock, a seriously intricate machine which allows you to measure the distance by road from March (in Norfolk) to any major town in the UK, by stretching out a cord and winding it around the pins painstakingly inserted into the junctions of the roads that you'd drive down on the way:

This week, however, I'd like you to show me how this 'hand ambulance' would work in action. I had to photograph it through glass, so the usual apologies for reflections and angle of view.

High res is here.

When I was boy my father had a tiny hand held odometer which you wheeled along the roads in the map. Once you had a figure on the dial you had to refer to a table of conversions to get the result in miles dependent on the scale of the map.

Re: Challenge 966: Hand ambulance
This was much, much harder than it looks. It's not your fault Steve but, because of limitations of space, this image has a very pronounced wide angle perspective which is tough to match. Just pulling the wheels off is hardly a challenge - I wanted to try and use as much of the original ambulance as I possibly could, so I had to do a major dissection and reassembly to get round the problem.

This, by the way, is all you will see from me for a while. Off to Munich for ten days.

The rickshaw works well, David.

The hospital chart completes it Gordon

What is a dunny (outdoor toilet) derby?
The Dunny Derby involves one person sitting on the 'throne' while two runners 'pushing', two runners 'pulling' the dunny. The race is run over 200 meters with a few 'obstacles' - the teams have to stop and pick up a toilet roll, a toilet brush and also have to empty the 'bucket'.

Re: Challenge 966: Hand ambulance
Some interesting entries. On a purely technical note, so far no-one whose moved the beast out of it's original environment has been able to match it's tricky perspective.

I couldn't come to terms with the hand cart. I liked the distance calculator and gave it a go... the cart is there, albeit just a reflection from across the aisle.

Re: Challenge 966: Hand ambulance
There's something peculiarly 'bendy' about the foreground leg but the sense of movement is just terrific!

Re: Challenge 966: Hand ambulance
Michael, I agree with David. It would be even better if you could get the sky to move smoothly from left to right.

Thanks David and Michael

I have followed your suggestion Michael and have now provided a "moving" sky!
