Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
The Hotel de Ville (town hall) in La Rochelle has undergone extensive remodelling after its 2013 fire, both restoring the grand hall to its original condition and building a striking modern council chamber in the attic above it. On a recent tour I was struck by this staircase, which reminded me of the works of M C Escher – or, more recently, the meticulous constructions of our own DavidMac. Can you populate it appropriately? Or incorporate it into another setting? High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
Well what a coincidence! I am off on Tuesday to Den Haag (the Hague) a delightful town in Holland. Far less known than Amsterdam it is in fact the capital. Interestingly it was the home of M C Escher and houses the Escher Museum. I shall be there all week so opportunity for me to contribute to this challenge is going to be severely limited indeed. Not sure what I can do in a hurry ........... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

http://vimeo.com/862622841 Such a beautiful staircase. It reminds of the one in Harry Potter. Loyd, that little boy looks like his is having the time of his life. I think if you animated him, there would certainly be tears before bedtime. David, have a great time in Holland and enjoy the museum. Quick one from me this week, I'll be away for a few days. ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West: I'm melting! I'm melting! |

Lovely Anna. You have somewhat taken the wind from my sails as I was working along similar lines to your still image. Hmmmmm ...... ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 971: JEALOUSY .........
Yes .... well ......... that's all three of us been tempted by 'mirroring' so far ............. ![]() Good to see the moose again Loyd. ![]() The existing perspective is so dominant that to do something 'Escherian' would require a complete disassembly and re-assembly. I quite simply don't have time for that. So I have settled for a sort of partial rebuild. It's very rushed and lots of the perspective doesn't bear close examination. But, as my Jamaican mother in law would have put it 'Man 'pon galloping horse na gwan notice!". Please mount up before criticising Steve. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David the overall effect is very pleasing: you have clearly put a bit of effort into this, and I'm sure Steve is going to like as well ![]() |

Re: Challenge 971: Escher's Hotel
Thank you Michael. It’s the kind of effort I enjoy. Often one the biggest time consumers is web searching for figures and accessories and then making a good extraction. Whenever I make a cut out of a person or accessory it goes into my personal library of cut outs. To speed things up everything in this image, except the re-build itself, came ready cut out from that library. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thank you Michael. Its my kind of 'stuff'. Light and architecture. If you look closely it's full of perspective inconsistencies. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 971: Moggy mix up ......
This is my last. Tomorrow gone. It's closest I can get in one day to an illusion using Steve's image. In the end, it's barely an illusion and it's not really even his image ...... I have simply taken steps and beams from it and built my own. So which Moggy is going up and which Moggy is coming down? Or is it which moggy is coming up and which Moggy is going down? ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 971: JEALOUSY .........
Likely the origin! I'm sure more than a few Yorkshire men ended up in the colonies. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
