Re: Challenge 973: Having a ball
This one was not as easy as I'd imagined. But it was still fun. Excellent entries so far.
In accordance to the disclosure, I used generative fill for the red panels, the apex of the tent and part of the swimming pool.

Yes it works perfectly. Excellent! The stuff of nightmares!

I think also that you are the only one who has managed to create a really believable transparent sphere. Having struggled with this I am seriously impressed.

Re: Challenge 973: Having a ball
First to blow up the ball this week was DavidMac, with a remarkable assembly: changing the original backgrounds of those spheres must have been a major headache. The result is spectacular, though, so many congratulations on your perseverance. Replacing the original back wall with the one seen through the balls was a wise choice.

A fun entry from Ant Snell, with impressive transparency. The man with the bow and arrows is a nice touch. I like the visible air escaping from the hole.

A curious spinning ball from lwc. Not sure this approach to transparency really works; perhaps if there were some non-spinning highlights on the surface? And it does perhaps need to interact more with the water. I like the theme of the Simpsons entry, but again the ball needs more substance. Perhaps if it were more opaque at the edges, where we’re looking through a greater density of plastic? The third entry is entertaining, and I like the way the girl spins inside the ball. I’m still not convinced by your approach to transparency but I do like the zebra entry, matching the girl’s sweater; and the dog is very cute. Good to see the moose in there.

I enjoyed michael sinclair’s spinning dolphin, with its ecological connotations. What I don’t really understand, though, is why you export your images as necessarily low res GIF files, rather than smooth-moving movies. Have you checked out my Tutorial on making animations on Photoshop with Smart Objects?

A great entry from Frank, with especially good interaction with the water. I like the girls in their swimsuits waiting their turn, but is there a scale issue here? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something odd about their relative size. I thought at first it was because the wall comes up the the waist of those in the back and much higher on those in the front, but I don’t think that’s it. It could be that the girls in the front are just too low in the scene.

I was amused by Josephine Harvatt’s rather cute hamster. The ball could, perhaps, do with more opacity. And I don’t know why, but I feel it would work better with the hamster in profile.

An astonishing amount of action in tooquilos's packed entry: the predators in the pool, the new fairground ride, and the terrifying clown. Of course, it’s the ball itself that deserves the most praise: a masterclass on how to make the transparency effect work too perfection. I’m amazed at how well the animated version works: that running man is brilliant. Outstanding work.

The thing I like most about Mariner's entry is the water, those perfect ripples radiating from the location of the ball. The ball itself works quite well; not so convinced about the way the girl sits inside it, although – as with so many entries this week – it’s hard to put my finger on exactly what the issue is. Too opaque? Too saturated? Maybe it’s the way the girl is in full sunlight – that could be it. You’ve asked for “no critique” on the Just for fun entry, but I have to say this is a truly extraordinary piece of work. Given that is was almost certainly created entirely by hand (I know you don’t use 3D tools), this is simple glorious. So no, no critique, but unbridled praise.

A fantasy entry from dwindt, with an interestingly textured ball containing a woman who’s clearly having a, er, ball. I really like the interaction with the water here, and the extreme pose. Perhaps we should be able to see something of the background through the ball?

_____

This was a tricky technical challenge, so congratulations for rising to the occasion. Good work, everyone.

Re: Challenge 973: Having a ball
Thank you Steve. This challenge was by far the most difficult I have tackled in ten years. Just getting the ripples right was hard enough, but the water ball - wow! Firstly it was obvious from the deflated one hanging up on the box that it was going to be red, blue and yellow. Then making it semi-transparent was not at all straightforward - too much and you lost the background, too little and and you lost the colour saturation. Worse still you should be able to see the back wall of the balloon through the front wall. I tried that but the result was a hodgepodge of unconvincing colours, so I gave up on that. When you had found someone suitable you had to put him/her inside it. A nightmare! I spent hours fiddling with that and the final result was far less than convincing. Then, when you thought you were just about finished you realized that the balloon must have a reflection. Creating that from scratch was easy. Putting it on or under the waves not so easy. I called it a day on Thursday morning.
That left me all Thursday night to fiddle with my second entry, which was fun, and very eye-catching, if rather unbelievable. I am glad you liked it.
