Challenge 978: A rhino on the tracks
The town of Rochefort in western France has an unusual train station in that to cross over to the other side of the tracks there's neither bridge nor underpass; instead, you go down to the end of the platform an literally walk across the tracks. Fortunately there's a helpful sign that explains what not to do: ![]() The sign reads "Facing the train itself does not make the weight". What on earth can it mean? High res is here. ![]() |

A quickie... didn't have a rhino, and I don't speak French, so I had to use a translator. The front of the train reads: 'We brake for elephants'. ![]() |

http://vimeo.com/879069702 Nice one Loyd ![]() Poor old coyote, he didn't see this one coming. Ben, there is a real sense of movement in yours. Very well done. The movement is fabulous but, it's the dappled light and shadows that stand out the most for me. Excellent Michael. ![]() _________________ Wicked Witch of the West: I'm melting! I'm melting! |

Re: Challenge 978: A rhino on the tracks
Well I am back from Athens which was marvellous ….. aside from having my pocket comprehensively picked by a team of professionals in the Metro. I realised it almost immediately and was able to stop all the bank cards within minutes of the theft. Still a pain as other stuff like my ID card went missing too. OK. Lesson learned. Need to be more careful …. but how? Where you put stuff securely? Anyway ’nuff of that. ![]() Interesting entries so far - lots of fun! Compliments to Mariner for his impeccable translation. Spot on! To "Faire les poids” means to be "At the same level or equal to …..”. My entry is based upon the absolute reverse - what happens when you sit down with a dictionary and no knowledge of French idiom or slang and make a literal translation. “Face au train même lui NE FAIT PAS LES POIDS." "Faced with a train even he DOESN’T DO WEIGHTS!” ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 978: A rhino on the tracks
You will remember it vividly for the rest of your life. One sunny morning in a very quiet village near Magaluf a friend and I were sight-seeing. We had that morning been to the bank and I, foolishly, had put about £300 in notes in the top pocket of my short-sleeved summer shirt, which, of course, was semi-transparent. In the village centre we came across four women, all dressed in black, who were standing around talking. As we came close, one of the women holding a rose came close to me and with the words "Rose, you buy rose?" tapped me on the pocket with her rose hand. I knew immediately what was happening and tried to grab her hand, but she had very quickly passed my money to one of the other women. They started to move off. Now, do I strip search one of the women in broad daylight? Or make a citizen's arrest? I think not. So I put it down to experience and I have never made the same mistake since. Thanks for the compliment. I only have schoolboy French and translate.google.com. |
