Challenge 984: In the kitchen
I photographed this rather fine kitchen seen some months ago, at the Museum of East Anglian Life, which has since rebranded itself as the Food Museum.

I'd really like to see this room with its inhabitants – and perhaps open the curtains?

High res is here.

Ant - where's Johnny? The bottles and the Take 35 are very naughty and funny!

Ben, aside having a perfect choice of figures you have done something else to this image to create all those clean gleaming edges. I keep looking at this and can't work out what it is you have done (some sort of emboss?) The effect is subtle but quite transforming.

Is it just me or is there something very odd about the layout of this kitchen in the original photo? To my eye the washing machine looks to be so close to the cooker that you wouldn't be able to reach it at all let alone open the oven door!

Re: Challenge 984: In the kitchen

David, Yes the kitchen is somewhat cramped. My images came from 1932 & 1950s faded halftone magazine covers. I needed to get rid of the dot pattern while maintain an acceptable image with a bit more punch. I used unsharp mask, increased contrast but it wasn't too good. I then applied Steve's Magical realism technique (page 386 HTCIPS CC).

My HTCIPS is for CS2 ....... probably a collectors piece now!

Sadly no magical realism there.

The effect that intrigued me, Ben, was not on the figures so much as your transformation of Steve's original photo. Somehow you have managed to give cupboards, cooker, etc. clean well defined edges which makes it fit perfectly into an illustrative context. (You can see what I am talking about particularly clearly on the drawers and door behind the foreground chair back.)

David, I did consider a Johnny, but couldn’t find a suitable image (only B&W that was too much work). This one is not an entry but as I recall didn’t you have something to do with the add, David? + I totally forgot to open the window the first time around.

Hi Ant. Yes. There were many made. They went on for years. One of the most successful and remembered UK campaigns of all time. I shot just one of them in the late seventies in Shepperton studios.

The Martians were operated with rods by puppeteers under the floor of the set. Since the puppeteers couldn't been seen by the director he would give directions directly to the puppets as is they were actors and, the puppeteers couldn't see the director either, they would make their Martians reply. It was an absolute hoot and we spent a lot of the shoot in helpless giggles.

Such fun!

I've been trying all week to ignore this but it just won't go away. I just wish it wasn't the kitchen

Good work Ben and Frank

The "reconstructed" sink unit merited special treatment I believe.

Note: 5 second pauses at beginning and end of this animation.

Lovely images everybody.

Michael, you had me waiting in anticipation. I was expecting an explosion!...

Gee, I thought it was Thursday. Being hammered at work. Not much time so a very simple 1.

Enjoy the weekend!

Re: Challenge 984: In the kitchen
First to cook this week was lwc, with a quickie animation. I do like the dog, and the budgie is fun. The zebra is a bit of a leap of imagination, but it does fit well drinking out of the sink.

Retro madness from Ben Boardman, with loads of detail – the kids are great, the one washing up fits perfectly at the sink, the baby in the tub. But it’s the classic stereotyping that works so well: the wife overjoyed by her spotless frying pan, the husband polishing the car. And of course the tea towel draped at the end of the kitchen unit. Glorious, Ben – a real tour de force. And a perfect fit all round in the second entry, complete with flying ducks and that period clock. And the mangle! So well thought out. I like the new window blinds.

Our overseas (from our point of view) members won’t recognise Ant Snell’s Fanny Craddock, an early TV cook always aided by her dopey husband Johnny. I like the period extras. Nicely composed, Ant. And I don’t know how to explain to anyone who wasn’t there that Smash instant mashed potato was sold to us by robots… extraordinary that DavidMac was involved!

I like how well the ironing board fits onto that space in Frank's entry, as well as the subtle change of perspective to accommodate it. The washing powder is a good addition, as is the calendar. Those are very neatly opened curtains!

Ah, the elephant in the room… GKB's clearly been at the Christmas punch a little early. I like the bowl of buns.

A true sink hole from michael sinclair, with a neatly reconstituted kitchen cabinet. Your perspective, though… vanishing lines point to the horizon, remember!

A cute 3D couple from dwindt – love those hair rollers! I have to admit, though, I’ve never seen a newspaper with two mastheads…

Good work, everyone, on this tricky Challenge.

Thank you Steve, I think the fact that I lived through that period, my parents had the clock, ducks, mangle, iron, soap powder, T towel, pressure cooker, condiment set. Really enjoyed that challenge. Merry Christmas.
