Challenge 1030: A construction project
I was coming up York Way from King's Cross on the top deck of a bus recently when I saw this curious work in progress. There's a lot of complicated concrete here, with what looks like steps on the left – but what are all those shapes on the right? Can you give me some idea of how this will look when it's finished? One for Mariner, certainly, but the rest of you might like to tinker with this tricky Challenge. With a bit of judicious planting I don't think it's quite as complicated as it appears on first sight. High res is here. ![]() |

That's really nice Ant. Some tricky angles perfectly fitted. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

A severely ruptured sewer has eroded the ground beneath the York Way Project causing its complete collapse. Older hands here will recognise that I have used a variation of a very familiar technique know as the Sinclair Bomb. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

"With a bit of judicious planting I don't think it's quite as complicated as it appears on first sight." says Mr Caplin. I didn't believe that for an instant so I thought instead of this cheeky quick'n easy cheat. Famous last words. It proved to be anything but and was surprisingly difficult. I haven't really pulled it off .......... ........ and it's still a cheat. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Given the chaotic challenge this week, I think you have been both inventive and resourceful David. ![]() ![]() O'Flannigan waterside developments has presented us with a "state-of-the-art" boat marina to enhance the local area's appeal. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1030: A construction project
Amazingly Michael this is surprisingly near the mark where I am concerned. Years ago in my twenties I managed to acquire an old rather derelict nineteen twenties Norfolk wherry, a type of single masted oak sailing barge designed for the shallow waters of the Norfolk broads - 65' x 14' if I remember correctly. My plan was to have it towed from Lowestoft around the coast and up the Thames and from there to London based moorings on the canal system, where I planned to re-habilitate it so I could live in it. I didn't realise until far too late that vacant moorings in London were like gold dust ... they were all snapped up long before and only changed hands with boats already attached to them. In the end I was forced to abandon the project. In the course of my searching I visited many moorings that looked depressingly like yours! I think nowadays they have been cleaned up and gentrified but back then, over fifty years ago, they were full of people like me who couldn't afford any better and were looking for a cheap way of living. Some were unbelievably scruffy! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1030: A construction project
First to deal with the construction work this week was lwc, with the addition of a trio of builders. Why is the one in the red hat so much larger than the man sitting next to him? I like the cyclist – very convincing. A tremendous pose for Godzilla, and very neatly animated, especially the twitching toes. The background smoke and flame create a good sense of destruction without you actually needing to destroy any buildings. Outstanding work from Ant Snell, turning the area into a skate park. Beautifully reconstructed buildings, an excellent angle on the new concrete, and some great extras – the basketball hoop on the lamp post, the boy grinding on the new sign – and, of course, the splendid expression on the traffic warden. Brilliant, Ant. I enjoyed DavidMac's bomb aftermath, chock full of detail: the outpouring sewer (with its twin the other side), the broken concrete, the concrete mixer, the fallen lamp post, as well as all the construction workers and the crowd of onlookers. An intriguing rebuild on the centre building at the back, where the lamp post has been removed: I like the way those new balconies catch the sunlight. Meticulous and very impressive. It took me a moment to realise that the mismatched view in the second entry was a photograph on the back of the railings – the fine texture and slight rippling give it away. A good cheat! And of course the man and son in the foreground give it the human angle. I like how the railings have been built on top of the existing structure. A very entertaining solution from michael sinclair, with gently bobbing boats forming the new marina. I like the rustic walkway going through the centre. As always, I find your HDR effect a little eye-jarring – there can be such a thing as too much detail. But it’s an impressive image nonetheless. I’d been wondering all week what Mariner would come up with, and it doesn’t disappoint. Everything in front of the background buildings has been redrawn, with taste and imagination. I like the shadow of the buildings opposite on the pavement. Just one sticking point: compare the size of the people bottom left with the man sitting to the right, against the perspective of the railings: if he stood up, his head would be above railing height. Either he should be smaller, or they should be bigger. |

Re: Challenge 1030: A construction project
Thanks Steve. I loved this Challenge because it kept me busy for a long time. Lately I have had far too much time on my hands.
Whoops. I nearly made the pair on the bottom left bigger. In the end I just didn't know, so I left it the way it was. |

Re: Challenge 1030: A construction project
Godzilla was fun to create, thanks Steve. Construction workers were originally photographed with a wide angle lens, the one in the red hat therefore appears larger and I failed to consider the perspective when I added them to the image. |
