I just started throwing various FX at this one just to see what I might end up with... ![]() |

Loyd. As always, it's the tiny things like the dogs that make your animations so compelling. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
Thanks David and Michael...! Michael, I've never tried to make an animation with photoshop and know nothing about it. Is there a way to add a final 'sky' layer only, to hide the two distractions? |

Yes you can add a sky layer to hide any distraction, and so much more too. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
Unable to think of anything interesting or amusing, I decided to utilize the chute for its intended purpose. May not look like much, but this was the most difficult and time-consuming of all to configure and stay under Imgur’s 20 mb limit (this at 19.6), especially in terms of timing. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
That's beautifully done Michael but, I hate to say, there are a few perspective anomalies, the truck particularly. It's hard to explain in a few words. Steve is much better at that than I. Hopefully he can sum it up in fewer words than I could. It's a shame because you've obviously put a lot of work into it and it has all the hallmark clean, painstaking, accomplished Mariner execution. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
First to slide down the chute this week was Ant Snell, with a really funny entry (and I have no idea where you found a photo of a load of builders swimming in a skip). The man in the foreground is brilliant. I understand why you had to shear the skip to make it fit the street, but why didn’t you shear the people back? ![]() I think “Ooh, Betty” is the appropriate response to DavidMac's entry, and I realise that will mean nothing to those who weren’t exposed to 1970s TV in the UK. Very nicely put together, although that ground shadow seems a little inappropriate: the people waiting at the bus stop don’t cast shadows. I loved the gnome entry, with the convincing smashing of the window – and that woman’s expression is spot on, although I have no idea what you would have searched for to find that image. I do remember Plastic Man, just about, although he’s buried deep in my subconscious. Very small point: I think a touch more shading on him as his tail disappears into the chute would make it look as if it was coming out of the middle, rather than right by the side. I greatly enjoyed the Wallace and Gromit entry, but you set yourself a ridiculously difficult challenge with the scaffolding removal! I think you’re too hard on your result. It works exceptionally well. I don’t think even Mariner could have bettered your reconstruction. Very fine work from lwc, with utterly convincing pouring out of the chute. The rising dust really adds to the overall effect. And good to see that mini truck from a few weeks back. The Elf entry is very funny, with Santa stuck in the chute. That’s a really wild-eyed Rudolf. Perhaps a touch more lighting on the Elf character? I like the bird entry, with its perfect flying motion. Maybe you should throw various FX more often: this is a really entertaining entry, with great internal coherence. Cute dogs. The final entry works particularly well, but I’m surprised the size was so big – it seems less complex than the other ones. Serious lateral thinking from Frank, with a ton of cash flying out of the chute. The cash itself is really well conceived, with the notes lying all over the pavement; and the crowd of people are perfectly posed to catch it. Perfect image, Frank. Top job. I like the pouring water in michael sinclair’s gleaming entry, although I can’t help but think it might have been better if it was pouring out of the chute, as in, you know, the instructions. But that is a fun amount of pipework. Ah – there we go! although I’m not sure what the lightning has to do with the flood. There’s a curious animated artefact top right, was that a different idea that you decided against? It looks like Mariner's construction work is finished, with a modern building replacing the Victorian original. Of course, the real gag here is the traffic warden and the scaffolding truck on the pavement: great matching of the chute. But I am going to have to take you to task on the perspective of the lorry. If we assume we’re roughly the same height as the traffic warden, then the sides should slope down as they recede, not up: ![]() A major flood scene from tooquilos, with a hedge replacing the bus stop on the left – and have you burned down the pub at the end of the street? A hugely impressive animated version, especially the collapsing building and pavement. You must tell me how you achieved this! Excellent. Very fine work this week, everyone. |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
Thank you Steve. Putting a lorry into perspective is a very difficult undertaking. First, you will create two vanishing points on your main picture. Then you spend several hours looking for a photo of a lorry which looks about right. You extract the lorry, then you try to stretch it to fit, and very likely you will fail. Then you cut your lorry into several pieces and stretch each piece indifidually to point to the vanishing points. This works better, but it takes such a long time that you start to get bored and are tempted to drop the whole idea and just do the same as all the other artists - something surreal. However, you have passed the point of no return, and your lorry still doesn't look quite right, but your time is running out. To publish or not to publish? Well, overall it is quite a good looking picture. I managed to find a photo of the original house on Brecknock Road on Google Eartch, removed the ivy which was covering the house front, and rebuilt tit, so it looks very much as it did before the construction men took it down and did some renovation. One point which was not mentioned by DavidMac, or by you, Steve, is that the LHS of the road is not quite right. At this point Brecknock Road has three lanes and my picture only has two. Because of the dreadful wide-angle lens distortion the nearby pavement is far bigger than it should be. Even after I had shrunk it down I was still only able to make the road two lanes rather than three. No matter, I decided to publish. Sorry about the lateness of the entry, Steve, this challenge kept me busy a full seven days. By the way, next time you are walking to the tube station take a look at the house behind the bus shelter. |

Yes, you can – or you can just do it so it looks right. I prefer the latter approach. And I’ll check the building behind the scaffolding! |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
My final entry was more complex actually, each of the chunks of debris was on a different path as it fell and at a different speed from the others. Each one was also rotating at a different speed, two of them clockwise and one counter-clockwise. The bit of dust added a little and in the background the dog’s head was moving slightly. The overall timing was a pain to make all of this happen and hide the 'loop' as much as possible. ![]() Thanks Steve, another fun challenge! ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1032: Down the chute
Quite right. I did it more out of habit than observation. Careless.
I can't remember either. It took a while to find something that wasn't obviously posed.
Yes to the shadow it would have better as you suggest. I don't know if Plastic man was ever much of a presence in the UK. I was at school with an American boy who got a bundle of American comics sent to him each month. We loved looking at them!
Thanks. I was standing too close when I wrote my sceptical self assessment. Coming back to it fresh today, after a short absence, it looks much better. BTW the flag'n chips background of my banner you have resuscitated was originally created over twenty years ago for our change of address card when we moved from London to Brussels. It caused a lot of amusement. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
