Challenge 1039: The supersub
It's not often I get excited about a submarine, but the latest offering from Dutch company U-Boat Worx is a thing of rare beauty. Part Jules Verne, part Flash Gordon, this is a craft that would look equally good beneath the waves or above a distant planet.

What can you do with this gem?

High res is here, and you can find more detail about it here, with photos from different angles here.

You're not doing me any favours, Steve. Interesting challenge. Why did I look?

Really looking forward to tackling this one but I only have a couple of days as my dearly beloved is dragging me away for a few days to a chilly Norfolk to go birdwatching 😱

I had a feeling you might want to rebuild it…

What gets wetter than a sub. A kids mouth drooling over a gumball machine.

How nice to see a James' banner again.

Lots of entries coming in thick and fast this week. It's a fun subject. Mine surprised me by being a lot more work than I expected. I though it was going to be simple!

Princess Aura guides Flash Gordon to her father Ming the Merciless in his War Rocket Ajax.

Re: Challenge 1039: The supersub
I am curious as to why the manufacturers chose to make this sub red. It's the first colour to get leached and absorbed under water. It would quickly turn a muddy brown and with only a slight distance become completely colourless.

The hardest part of this challenge is the inside of the transparent globe shaped front under water. It's effectively a large very concave lens. Concave because the denser medium (the water) is on the outside. If we consider the water as analogous to glass the lens to air surface is on the inside.

I couldn't get my head round what this might produce beyond a vague notion of a negative 'fishbowl' effect, so I researched. The result you see here, with an outer reflective ring and an inner transparent circle looks very odd and surprising but, although I haven't got it quite spot on, it's surprisingly close to the truth however odd it may look! It's worth enlarging to get a proper look at this.

This odd result and the optics that arrive at it are so so surprising that I have done a detailed post on how and why. It was far more work than the entry itself! It's here in Problems and Solutions. Although it gets a bit technical do please look at it because it really is quite fascinating. (Well it is if, like me, you have a tiny trace of nerd buried somewhere deep inside. Should be very interesting too for the 3D folks familiar with concepts of refraction and reflection.).

Interesting observations David, too much for me to tackle. I did make this today somewhat based on your 'Problems and Solutions' explanation but did not get the thickness of the plexiglass quite right.

Loyd. Although I know what happens optically, i haven’t a clue how to apply that knowledge in Photoshop except guesswork by eye.

I couldn't find the 'one-click' button for this effect either.
