Challenge 1064: Getting in a lather
A workshop on the Crossness Pumping Station site (see Challenge 1060) contains a variety of equipment for maintaining and renovating the site. Being a wood lathe fan myself, I was intrigued by this extra-large version.

What on earth could you make on a lathe this size?

High res is here.

Are you sure this is a wood lathe Steve? I can't see much use for it in the context of the pump house.

A jawed chuck of this type is more typical of metal lathes and there is a tool carrier with hand wheels and a rotating tool head with grooves and bolts for fixed cutters rather than the tool rest for hand held chisels commonly found on wood lathes.

Either way it's a wonderful object.

My family arrived from England yesterday for a one week stay so I think it is unlikely I will be able to get to grips with this lovely object this week.

Aha! I misread! Although slightly ambiguous, the sentence doesn't necessarily imply you took it to be a wood lathe.

Lazy reading.

I dunno, solid brass curtain rods perhaps?

A bit of first impression silliness and not animated.

Alfred E Newman of Mad Magazine. I expect it's closed down now. No, it hasn't. I just checked.

Before I add 3D or manipulate the lathe anymore, (should time permit), I'll post my PS manipulation. I wanted to see if I could envisage the lathe with the red poles and rope deleted. It was definitely no easy task. I wish I could post a bigger copy but this is the best I can do.

Nice work Dennis, lots of effort to do that... some unscrupulous person like me is tempted to steal it. Probably would get a big fine from OSHA for removing the safety rails though.

I see that Ben has also gone to the trouble of removal.

P.S. Your work looks good as a background for my next entry Dennis.

Dennis, well done. But why not just put a link to your imgur.com website image? If you reply to this entry you will see what the link should look like.
If your web-site image is good you will get much better results.
Important: your image will not appear on the FC until you refresh the FC page it is on.
