Challenge 1097: Three holes
I drove through this interestingly-named village in Norfolk recently, and I'm sure Mariner's researches will reveal the origin of the name. But can you devise a way of creating three holes in this landscape that would be a more interesting explanation? High res is here. |

Re: Challenge 1097: Three holes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Three Holes is a hamlet in the parish of Upwell in Norfolk, England. It is named for a former bridge over a nearby dike, which is illustrated on the town sign. It is just within the Norfolk boundary, on the A1101 between Ely and Wisbech. Located on the border of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, the two sides of the river are in separate counties. |

Nice David. I'm surprised I never saw them on the diving platform. A port-loo just for you. No cheating this image. All PS.

This will mean something to every single Brit when it comes to the atrocious state of our roads. Not three holes but three million. The UK is just one gigantic pot hole held together by a few pieces of tarmac.

Re: Challenge 1097: Three holes
Pumping units, good idea David, I wish I had thought of that. Bullet holes in rural roadside signs were pretty common to see in the 40s and 50s. While it may not make any cents at all, pennies dropped in the USA mean the same thing. I must add that I was not surprised at all seeing your gnomes doing their thing...

Re: Challenge 1097: Three holes
We have the same 'pothole' issues here Gordon.
EDIT: In all fairness to local road repair crews, Oklahoma City covers 621 sq. miles, takes a lot of patching to keep up. |

Re: Challenge 1097: Three holes
Ben this is beautifully done, absolutely seamless (although Steve, I suspect, may be tempted to point out a conflict of scale between tiny people and giant sign). But, quibbles aside, and despite the beautiful execution, there something else much more puzzling that I can't quite get my head around. If I look at the right hand end of the bridge and everything else to the right of that, the ploughed field, the sign and the grass appear to be all on the same level except where the grass bank drops down around the slopping buttress. That being so the field directly behind the bridge, being on the same level, would come forward to touch the base of the far parapet, which is indeed exactly what it appears to do! This, however, would mean that the bridge is not in fact a bridge, but the openings of tunnels under the field. In this case there would be no sky reflection in the water under the arches, it would be completely dark. The presence of sky reflections implies a bridge and not tunnels. If this is the case, if the bridge is indeed a bridge, then I would expect to see a distinct change of level and some indication of the emergence of the quite substantial body of water, behind it. As it is the river seems to magically disappear altogether. Am I being horribly literal minded, or is there some kind of anomaly here? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

[quoted] DavidMac wrote: Ben this is beautifully done, absolutely seamless (although Steve, I suspect, may be tempted to point out a conflict of scale between tiny people and giant sign). David, thank you for you observations and taking the time to discuss them. The sign scale I totally missed, concentrating on perspective matching and just didn’t see it. The original image of the bridge that I found, did indeed have water running both side. I tossed up between a flooded are in the field and continuing the river. After several messy attempts and probably tiredness I decided it looked OK. Well caught. Your comments add extra lessons to the challenge. Thank you, Ben |
