Challenge 1106: Space at the Saatchi
I recently visited the Saatchi Gallery in London for an exhibition celebrating its 40th anniversary. For those who aren't aware of him, Charles Saatchi is the former advertising boss who discovered and promoted the Young British Artists movement in the 80s – Tracey Emin, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Damien Hirst and others.

Walking between galleries took me to this stairwell. Nothing on the walls, nothing hanging in the middle, no view through the window. Surely this space is crying out for an exhibit?

High res is here.

I am a bit stuck on this at the moment. So this really rather dull submission will have to do for now.

It seems the gallery is doing a retrospective. I don’t know if these images will mean anything in the US or down under, but Brits will remember them. They were part of a campaign for Silk Cut cigarettes by the Saatchi and Saatchi agency in the late 1980’s and early 1990s. By then advertising regulations forbade the use of images of cigarettes so they came up with an iconic campaign based upon almost abstract images that symbolised the name Silk Cut.

I was going to put Charles Saatchi in there but he never attended his gallery’s openings and hid away even from clients. When asked why he replied: "I don't go to other people's openings, so I extend the same courtesy to my own."

In 1984, the Gallaher Group hired Charles Saatchi’s ad agency to design an innovative ad campaign which would obey U.K. cigarette advertising restrictions while still promoting the Silk Cut product. The new ads, which circulated for over a decade, created a visual pun by utilizing purple silk in the ads, representing the royal purple silk ribbon which seals each Silk Cut cigarette box.

Interesting. Same .... but quite different! I'd never seen any of yours. Every country where Saatchi & Saatchi were a presence had their own office with their own local creatives so the same central idea took different forms in different countries. The one's I used came from France as well as UK.

Loyd. Missed yours earlier. Tracy ..... the bad girl who the Brits dealt with in their typical way by absorption rather than rejection. Poor woman's been made respectable.

That's lovely Ben. It's seamlessly put together, but I have one teeny niggle. I can"t help wondering if your photographer isn't a stilt walker!

Maybe I am just completely misreading .............

David – Yes, of the artists Steve alluded to, her work was easiest to incorporate into the image.

Re: Challenge 1106: Space at the Saatchi
I have always thought that it would be nice to have an exhibition of my work so when Charles Saatchi called I agreed.

Gordon, that's very elegant and tasteful. Who is the man? Saatchi? It's hard to tell at this size.

Now that's really neat Gordon. I like the way you've let Damien's shark creep into the background.
