I'm jealous
This guy's image processing talents make me sick! I'm still amazed.

Re: I'm jealous
Me too! Seems to me he is using some the curves technique to create metallic effect in Steves's book, but with colors...-

Re: I'm jealous
Some very interesting images there Stefan. One of the nice things is that the quality of the original image that he had to work with is very good.
I tried to replicate what he has done using the idea that Pierre proposed. This was just a quick try and you could spend a lot more time refining the image. It's not quite what this chap gets on his pics but I reckon he spent a lot more time on it htan I did!
I put young Harry here on a separate layer then desaturated the layer. Then I used a curves adjustment layer to introduce the metallic sheen and then played with the blending mode changing it to Overlay or Soft light or Hard light. I found that Soft light (in this particular case) worked best.
You can then go back to the curves layer and tweak it to see what looks best as you can see changes in 'real time'.

Re: I'm jealous
Here's a first quick experiment. Took a picture of my daughter today . Needs a bit of tweaking but I think it's getting close.Of course I didn't do the wrap around lighting which is crucial to this as it creates the highlights etc.

Here's mine. I've been going at this fro few days now. Then when I saw the link from Stefan and realized I was really on the good track!! But not there so I used the tut and it gave me this. I like the effect, and did not have a lot of highlites either on my original.

Re: I'm jealous
Very nice. I really like this effect. I printed out one picture on nice photopaper and it looks great.

I googled "Dave hill + photoshop" and quite a few things turn up although I 've only looked at the link I put up so far.

Just a matter now of tweaking and experimenting with the settings I guess

Nice find Stefan. When I get some time (and the right pic) I'll have a go myself. I certainly like the effect - I just hope that not too many people find out about it or we'll all be doing it!

You're right about that Gordon....actually I think it's already a bit too late........so many people are already doing or trying to do it..
But I guess it's a good base to add on to and make it your own.

Here's one I put some more effort into....

Re: I'm jealous
well yeah..of course...and she loves doing pics like that as you can imagine.
But this technique works wonders even without the wraparound lighting.
Here's a FINAL one ( I promise) using the same technique and a bit of beauty retouching.( actually just a gaussian with a mask and then sharpening applied-playing with the settings).
This was taken on an overcast day in front of our house, so no big set up.

Re: I'm jealous
and this was the original. It took about 20 minutes to retouch. Don't you just love photoshop !!!!

Wow! I disappear from the thread for a few days and look what happens. It blows up!

Fantastic job everyone! Stefan, that last one is a beautiful render to an already great picture!

You guys are inspiring. I'll have to have a go with my niece and post the results.

Re: I'm jealous
Pierre or Stefan,

I was working on this tutorial..and got a bit lost.

Could you explain to me where he says

"....now use brush on the tool palette and set the brush to 30% opacity. Brush over entire image..."

(This comes after youve applied the layer mask. )

Do you use the Black or White brush?

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you

Anna

Re: I'm jealous
Hi Anna,

the way I did it was just make a layer mask filled with black and then brush over it with a 30% white brush.
Hope that helps
