I am really excited to venture into CS4 http://tv.adobe.com/ I've already been browsing around the net looking for videos on the new features. This new Creative Suite looks extremely promising. |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
It does seem at times that Adobe think people have an endless stream of money at their disposal but they only really care for the Professional market who are quite willing to lay out another £1,000+ for a new version of Creative Suite we have to make do with second hand copies bought from dubious places like EBay etc. or buy Elements which while Elements is getting better it's a big downgrade from it's bigger brother especially if that's what you have developed your skills on I have had Photoshop from version 5 which came installed on the computer I tried to keep up to date but I despair now - no wonder Piracy is rife and I certainly don't condone that path. I gave up with Photoshop for a while as any hope of breaking into a career using Photoshop for me is utterly pointless and futile. Sorry to be so downbeat ![]() Becky |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
Becky, I agree. I'm still using PS7, and it does what I need it to do. I could do with having image warp, but I usually find a way round it. I did actually use Photoshop to earn money for a while, restoring people's photos, but I have ME and am no longer well enough to commit myself to it. I agree about piracy - I don't really condone it, but who's got £1000 to keep buying software? |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
katew I'm very sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're well enough to come on here and submit your Photoshops, they're very enjoyable. ![]() I do think Adobe have an awful cheek, releasing a new version every few months or so... especially since a lot of the so-called new versions don't have anything particularly new about them. A tweak here, a few add-ons there... big deal. ![]() I used to be a right stickler when it came to piracy issues. But with so much blatant disregard for the fair treatment of the consumer/general public in the last few years, I've fence hopped. ![]() What these big companies are getting away with isn't right.. but seeing as there's no law to make them charge a fair price for their software/program/DVD/CD/whatever.... ![]() ** Gets large sign and starts picketing outside the Adobe offices. ** ![]() |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
I can understand why Adobe would charge the price they do especially for businesses or profressional designers who will make a good deal of profit out of their software, it just seems to me Photoshop Elements is so basic as to not be an option for anybody used to the power of full Photoshop. Perhaps Elements should be upgraded to feature more of the powerful facilities of Photoshop but without all those additional Professional Tools like video editting and such. Maybe a good idea would be for a modular version of Photoshop where like now you can buy Plugins you would get a bare-bones Photoshop CS4 and you can buy the extra features you need to plug into Photoshop such as the Warp Tool, Vanishing Point Tool, Seam Carving Tool etc. therefore making it more affordable and adaptable for the casual/amateur user and people could really personalise their Photoshop to be purely for Photo-editing/Montage and not buy the other modules you rarely, if ever, get to use. Actually the more I think about this idea the better I like it - because rather than having to upgrade to a full version of Photoshop each time you simply buy the new features that are released and don't buy the ones you won't need making the cost only an issue of what you want from your Photoshop so the more adaptability the bigger the cost the more specific the needs the lower the cost. |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
I find Elements a dead loss. But like you said, it's probably because I've been used to the full Photoshop program. I like your idea of customising it though, it would be great to have that option. ![]() I did a graphic design course.. well no, I started a graphic design course.. in which the tutor was trying to teach us about image editing using a dinosaur version of Elements. ![]() Fabulous teacher she was too. When it got to the point where I had to lean over after a half hour of her constant whining and tell her she couldn't move the layer because it was locked.... it was time to leave and write it off as a bad deal. ![]() Had nightmares about it for weeks. Waking up screaming.. Unlock the layer! Unlock the layer!! |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
The CS4 release date seems to be October 30th. I broke the bank to get CS3 Web Premium and the new upgrade is over £500 but it looks so good that I think I'll be unable to resist. The fact is that you don't get software of that quality without paying a hefty price for it. They put a collossal amount of work into each release and I think we're all grateful for the innovations they make. They're probably working on CS5 already.... |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
Yes it worries me too - if indeed they are working on CS5 why the rush to release CS4? It seem to be quite a gravy train to keep putting out a few new features after a year or so when perhaps they could hold off for another year and really give us a Photoshop worth a month's wages. Things have change quite a bit when I started out on my Amstrad CPC464 and was over the moon at the 8 bit graphics then when I got my Amiga A1200 with Deluxe Paint and a very basic GIF Animator and by hook or by crook able to able to get started on the internet I thought I was as cutting edge and paid only a fraction of the price of what Photoshop costs now. Technology isn't really changing as fast as we think it is it just the same old soup with a new label attached (probably using the Warp Tool in Potatoshop) Photoshop looks sleek and brimming with features but it has always been like that and it seems every year someone at Adobe says "Hey we've been listening to you guys (read Professionals) and we have come up with this fantastic new widget you really want to have plus some other stuff you could have lived without but hey! it's Photoshop CS4 that's got to be better than CS3, right guys?" *ding sounds of a cash register ringing* It's the same thing with Mobile Phones - "Hey look guys we can give you internet interaction on-the-go!, a smart compact camera with 8 mega pixels and built in image editing software, a personal organiser so that you organise your very busy lives, games displayed on a large viewing screen where you can play against friends online, a smart intutitive text editor for your text messaging, an online messenger service to chat online, and hey somewhere in there is a phone!" technology seems smart but in reality we are being overloaded with features rather than innovations so that a phone is no longer just a phone and a new phone is the same as an old phone but just with more stuff on it. It seems a bit cynical to put it into that context but let us at least reach the depths of CS3 before having to shell out again or be left behind in the race for additional features. |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
Maiden, I accept what you say and I'd be delighted if it was cheaper but whenever I have to use an earlier version of Photoshop I always find myself missing the new features and wondering how I used to cope without them. From what I've seen, CS4 is a pretty major overhaul and while it won't be necessary for many users, I think there will be plenty of people who find the changes quite significant. You could argue that they should hold off for another year or so but the current upgrade cycle (which I believe is 18 months) is probably about right. After all, if you don't think the new features are worth the money then you probably won't miss them. The danger of waiting too long and then bombarding us with dozens of new features is not only the steep learning curve but also that our hardware might not be able to keep up! |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
For my twopenny worth: I only got CS3 extended 5 months ago (birthday present), so would probably not look at getting CS4 right now, but I can always wait and get the upgrade of CS5 when it comes out, the upgrades are not too expensive (apart from the CS3 extended version)! and when I consider the hours of enjoyment I get from photoshop I consider it money well spent. I had to spend over £1000 getting my car through it's MOT, so £180 (ish) on an upgrade of photoshop which gives me far more enjoyment is pretty good value. |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
Interesting comments from everyone. We do seem to be swept along in the rush to have the latest version. Is it because we feel inadequate personally if others have it and we don't? When one sees posts stating 'created using CSXX ultra mega version' the immediate thought is that the artist must be professional and therefore much better than me. This is certainly not true as a generalisation and I've seen plenty of excellent work produced using PS7 and even earlier. Kate's comment and work endorses this. I started using elements which came free with my Canon 10D back in 2004 and it was not until upgrading to the full CS did I realise what I'd been missing, i.e. masks / channels etc. But how far do you go, unless you're in the trade and the company is willing to fork out every time Adobe decide to provide something different? Perhaps the best approach for dabblers like me is to skip versions, because the beauty of this tool is the ability to approach a challenge from more than one angle. For what it's worth, I firmly believe that if you have talent, it will show whatever version you're using. If you simply cannot grasp lighting, colour, angles and perspective, then CS4 or anything they bring out will not help you. On the positive side, it's good for guys like Steve and Martin Evening, who can churn out another book! Nick |

Re: Cool Feature in Photoshop CS4
Hey don't give up trying! I have nothing more that a few GCSE's under my belt, and have moved from print shop to print shop just waiting for an opening then I moved on to BlahDVD.com but was later made redundant when the company was sold to a bunch of idiots who messed up the site and have probably accelerated their inevitable downfall... anyway.. got sidetracked, my point is I have just recently started working in a proper design agency employed entirely based on my ability and experience.. I'd say everyone else on here has the same amount of chance of this happening to them too! You just have to keep at it, work your day job but build a portfolio by night... (mine will be posted here as soon as I finish the layout) post your CV around all your local design agencies, it should really be easier for you guys than it was for me... I live in jersey of all places, theres not a lot of options for work don't give up hope, you'll find the job you want |
