Format large drives with FAT32
As I'm about to change to Mac, I find I need to reformat my external drives to Fat32, so I can use them both with my new Mac and my PC laptop.
Finally found a nice easy way of doing it, after spending days trying
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
It really works and is very quick.

Re: Format large drives with FAT32
So you mean external drives that are NTFS formatted can't be read/write on Macs?
Hhmm... I didn't know that Macs don't have support for NTFS.

Re: Format large drives with FAT32
Seems a very helpful link Vibeke. Thanks.

Vibeke's correct according to my understanding, but not an expert on Mac OS.

There are some driver / OS software solutions available to enable you to mount and read/write Window partitioned NTFS disks, but some/most solutions seem prone to errors/corruption. The web has plenty more discussions and links to software. I guess if go down this path, be very aware and careful.

Re: Format large drives with FAT32
With FAT32 you can only store files of 4GB and smaller. 4GB sounds big until you try to store a DVD image.

I recently went the other way and reformatted my FAT32 external drive as an NTFS so I could use it for large files on both Mac and PC.

So far using NTFS-3G on the Mac I've had no problems.

Re: Format large drives with FAT32
Thanks Paul, I knew there were some programs out there, but having spent a small fortune on the New Mac I had to draw the line somewhere.
My external drives are mainly for my photographs and until I also upgrade my laptop to Mac I will need to be able to access them from both systems.
