Adobe Lightroom Beta version, free
This software seems to act much like Adobe Bridge...I think some of its features should end up as a plugin for Bridge in future versions.

By the way, when is Adobe planning the release of CS3? Anyone have any news links on the subject?

Re: Adobe Lightroom Beta version, free
Chris,

Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen indicated CS3 would be out about 2nd quarter 2007. We will just have to wait and see. Adobe was previewing features this weekend at Photoshop World in Los Vegas (in keynote address Friday, and a Russell Brown session Saturday) but I haven't heard any details so far.

Lightroom is aimed at a completely different audience than Photoshop. It's chief competitor will be Apple's Aperature. While some of the functionality is similar to Bridge, it is not a Bridge replacement or enhancement. It will be interesting to see how Lightroom influences Bridge, but they are on completely different evolutionary tracks.

Thank you for the response, Bob. I'm curious to see how Adobe and Macromedia's tools and workspace will blend together on the new releases. It seems to me that the software could easily get a bit complicated to users...

I haven't seen your work in a while! You've always been most helpful with advice and technical questions!

Re: Adobe Lightroom Beta version, free
Thanks chris! I've been pretty busy lately and just haven't had the time to participate as much as I would like.

It looks like Adobe is trying to keep CS3 pretty much under wraps for now. I heard that the Photoshop World keynote briefly showed it running but did not disclose any of the new features.

What's really interesting is that Adobe just announced the release of Photoshop Elements 5 (to be available in October). The history has been that new releases of Elements came out after the release of the corresponding new version of Photoshop that it was based upon - Elements 3 was based on the CS engine, Elements 4 was based on the CS2 engine, for example. The question is whether Elements 5 is based on the CS3 engine or whether they made a break and now have an independant code base. I'm assuming the CS3 engine is complete and Elements 5 is based on that. I've heard rumors to the effect that much of the CS3 delay is due to the effort needed to produce a universal binary for the Mac (interestingly, there is no Mac version of Elements 5). But, Adobe is moving more of the organizer functionality into the Elements editor so I could easily be wrong and it may be going down a separate evolutionary code path. Time will tell.

It is interesting to note that Adobe included flash galleries and slide shows into Elements 5 for the first time and they added a color curves feature that looks very similar to the curves adjustment in Lightroom. I'm curious as to whether some of the lightroom functionality will make it into CS3.

I'm a CS2 user, so I'm very interested in what's happening with CS3.

Re: Adobe Lightroom Beta version, free
Maybe to clarify a bit what Lightroom is. From my understanding, it is more aimed at photographers that need to manage, color retouch and print their photographs. It is not aimed at "artist" like most people in this forum that use Photoshop to CREATE art from other pictures or manually. Also, it is quite complex (I have been using it since the Beta release for Windows was announced about a month ago) as it is aiming at professionnals or serious hobbyists.

Although a bit complex, it is quite good (to my opinion). Apple has a similar/competitor software called Apperture.
