Image Copyright Search
I don't know where I discovered this, or if someone's already posted it to the forum. But here's a website I've been using for some time now, www.tineye.com

After registration, you can run a search based on a given image. It will immediately give links to where that image exists on the web, if anywhere.

It "reads" the characteristics of the image, and doesn't require any text imput as required by a traditional search.

It's worth noting that this program is in its infant stages, and has indexed only a fraction of the images on the internet.

Re: Image Copyright Search
What a good idea! Especially with the way image copyrights are going now, it's very handy to have sites like that. I'll definitely be checking that out. Thanks for the link!

Re: Image Copyright Search
Just been using this site again, and it really is extraordinary. I did a search on Ben Mills' entry in this week's Friday Challenge, and Tineye turned up the original background photo:

Amazing!

Re: Image Copyright Search
Having looked at it I have to admit.. I find it creepy. In a 'big-brother-is-watching-you' kind of way.
It'll give me the willies any time I'm searching for images.
It's brilliant.. and useful.. but creepy.
I would assume that this is the sort of technology big image websites use, to discover who is using their images illegally?
..........
.......
.....
Anybody got one of those Dial-A-Lawyer numbers handy?
Seriously though, this sort of thing will affect people like us to a certain extent. I try to use free image sites where possible, but it's not always an option.
Definitely something to think about.

It is amazing. It had been renamed, resized and added to yet it still found the match. This is the technique Getty use I'm sure. (or one of them)

This chain is linked neatly to the entry under 'General Comments', which you posted a short while back - A word of warning......

Did anything come of that?

Nick

Nothing yet. We informed Getty that they needed to write to the other company director who created the website. I believe they did, but I don't know what is happening. I am pretty sure nothing has been paid to them but I am unaware of any current negotiations / threats.

I will post back in the original thread when I know how it ends

Re: Image Copyright Search
Wow, thanks everyone for the responses! I agree, it is kind of creepy considering the engine can find heavily manipulated images and still match it to the original. I'm part of an aerial photography forum and tineye has proven to be very useful. I found a fellow photographer's image being used illegally for the front cover of a book! It was listed on Amazon.com for sale! I've already found a couple of my own aerial photography being used illegally, and the company involved paid a hefty fine. They're not using the image for practice, personal work, but for promotional material (they were also a corporate office). Without Tineye, I would have never known the wiser. For the american photogs here, always register your images with the Copyright office. I send a CD of mine in once a month, and the cost/benefits far outweigh the minimal time involved to get it done!

Yes, this is amazing. I found the image I used for last weeks challenge and I love the toggle feature so you can see the before and after. I've searched on a few of my own images and nobody is using them. WHY NOT??, aren't they good enough?!!

Want me to mangle a few of them to make you feel better?
We'll each edit one and hide it on the internet for you to find. Kind of like an Easter Egg Hunt, only without the tasty rewards.

Yeah, why not Celia, or perhaps I've mangled them enough already!
