64gb Mac?
I'm considering buying a new mac, I was thinking 24 gb of ram was overkill, untill I came across this beast. You can drool over those specs http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apple-Mac-Pro-QUAD-2-26Ghz-64Gb-RAM-8-CORE-12000GB-12TB-/370487011630?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Desktops_CV&hash=item5642bf292e

But do we really need that much power? It would be like sticking a drag engine onto a school bus right?, which brings me to this link..

Re: 64gb Mac?
I remember 'future proofing' my first PC. It had a 486DX33 processor and I upgraded the RAM from 4 to 8 Megabytes and I got the biggest hard drive I could afford - 120 Megabytes. Take away the memory for the operating system(Windows 3) and Photoshop 4 (no, not CS4 ... 4!) and I wouldn't be able to get two photographs from my Nikon D700 on there.

And was it Bill Gates himself that said that he could see no reason why anyone should ever need any more than 64K of memory?

Ah you had the DX model! My first PC was only a 486SX33!, I was one of the first kids in school to have a CD-ROM drive ha!, I also upgraded the ram from 4 to 8mb, I remember it cost me about £120!, I worked two paper rounds for that and got my mum to pay half! , now if only I'd invested that £120 in Dell Shares instead!.. $$

Just to be clear that £120 after 4 or 5 years would have been worth about the price of this 64gb Mac!..

I don't know who would buy that. The seller clearly doesn't know what he has.

In the top part he says it's a 2,26Ghz Quad, then he says it's 8 core, then a Duo. He should make his mind up.

It has a VGA out too according to him. No it hasn't. It has two display outputs but neither are VGA.

I fell off my chair at the 56KB/s modem. (lower down he says that is optional. I've thrown better modems than that in the bin)

The spec at the bottom is closer to the mark.

Whatever it is, it's three year old technology at best. The current Mac Pros are 12 core and they are soon to be replaced.

He is selling that for £7995. You can buy a brand new Mac Pro Octo with faster processors, with the same RAM and storage for £1500 less from Apple.com or £3500 less if you upgrade the ram and hard drives yourself!

Re: 64gb Mac?
I just built myself a new PC running both Win7 and OSX Lion. It has an i5 2500k over-clockable intel quad core processor, 16 GB RAM, 1GB graphics card, one SSD and two Hard Drives, water cooled. Cost around £900 for parts and runs as fast as a Mac Xeon workstation costing in excess of £3000. At last I can run After Effects properly and now experiment with 3D in photoshop without huge slow down.
