It's a Knockout:The Magnifying Glass Effect.

Becky - Thank you for a terrific tutorial! Ive just been playing with it and with various blending modes for the glass and have come up something that really has a lot potential. The blending mode I used for this one is "Difference". Just add a few keyframes in AE and voila! Wonderful. And one more thing, I never knew about KNOCKOUT..so thank you also for making me aware of it Anna

You may also like to know that in AfterEffects the Warp effect could be used to give the magnifying glass even more realism as the lens is a double convexed lens (in other words fatter in the middle than at the edge) - so a live spherise warp moving with the lens will make it even more like the real thing! I was considering making a Halloween spooky effect using Knockout with an X-Ray Specs effect
But consider Knockout to be a little-used way of making a very dynamic mask you could use text with animated pictures within the text, blending modes which you have already discovered Anna and may other animation possibilities which frees up the usual restrains of a normal layer mask. I'm so glad I've inspired someone to experiment with this - perhaps Steve will post it as a Friday challenge I'd like to see what others experiements will throw up

I've experimented with animated shallow knockout layers http://www.vimeo.com/7041104 What I found interesting is that you can stack grouped Shallow Knockouts to create very complicated animations. Just sucessfully made a clip using a video layer with alpha transparency as a knockout layer for the video below the knockout group = proving the power of this little used Blending effect. http://www.vimeo.com/7047556 |

Wow that's brilliantly realised, Anna - a perfect use of the technique.
I was thinking of doing a dancing girl across black and white footage of a field where the girl's layer was a knockout coloured version of the field so the girl would appear transparent except for a colour silhouette of her as she danced across the screen - A bit like the iPod commercials but without solid colours. But alas I don't have any such footage, I could greenscreen myself dancing, but you don't want to see me dancing I'd look like a hippo wearing clogs in silhouette - haha |

It would look awful if it was me dancing Plus I have a lot of work to clear out what was going to be my studio but ended up being a dumping-ground for all the stuff/junk we've collected.
I think it's time for a clear out. |
