Removing color from parts of a photo.
Here is another Photoshop 7.0 video tutorial on removing color and leaving the other parts of a photo in color. I originally did this tutorial back in 2003 using Photoshop 5. This tutorial is very easy and I hope it would help people who are starting out to learn Photoshop.

Tutorial Details:
  • Video Format: Quick Time
  • Total Time: 5:07min
  • Download File Size: 1.00 MB
  • Video Dimension: 800 x 600

NOTE: TUTORIAL NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Nice tutorial Luis, you have a very polished style of explaining precisely what needs to be done and although there are lots of methods of doing this style of 'colour popping' your explanation probably ranks as the easiest and best to understand for those new to layer styles and layer masks, very well done.

Hi Becky.

Thanks for your comments. I always try to show and explain the steps in the tutorial, so that someone new to photoshop can understand and follow along with the tutorial.

Well it's the fact that you have a very professional manner to explaining the steps - I've seen far worse tutorial explanations from experts.

Personally speaking while 'Dr' Russell Brown's Tutorials in themselves are very good the way he explains them is very frustrating and a little annoying and you have to get through a lot of his comic-book style antics to get to the information he's getting across making for overlong video tutorials - however as I've said that's just my pet hate others may love his humour. *shrug*

If I could just pick up on one thing with your tutorials, you might want to include a very brief explanation why you chose Filter X or Texture Y etc. that way not just explaining how you did something but more importantly why you did it which takes the viewer along a learning curve rather than just repeating parrot-fashion if you know what I mean.

I have seen several tutorials from Russell Brown and I have to agree that the way he explains things can get kind of annoying at times.

Interesting point. I will try to keep that in mind. When I create my tutorials, I keep 2 things in mind: the time and show the steps in creating something. For example, my textures tutorials, I have all my steps written down on paper and I show each step while reading the steps. I don't write down why I chose that particular filter or pattern and maybe that is why there is no explanation. I do this with most of my tutorials. When I'm recording a tutorial, my goal is not to make a mistake or go off point so I won't have to do that much editing. So far I haven't done a perfect take on a tutorial.

Thanks for the tip and I will try to remember to give explanations.

No problem, Luis.

I agree you have time limitation and therefore a more detailed explanation has to be sacrificed for a more succinct one to ensure the tutorial doesn't overrun on file size and time. In your example of your textures for the corkboard tutorial it would simply be too complex to explain why you selected those particular textures but perhaps a few words may have been warranted on the Blending Modes you used.

Saying that it may seem like I'm being pendantic as your tutorials are really very good indeed, I suppose my suggestion is to try to push you into the super league of Video Tutorials as with the clear understanding you have of Photoshop you should be able to market your Tutorials in the way the likes of Scott Kelby does and makes some really big bucks with it

It would be cool to earn money from my tutorials. I feel that I do not have enough knowledge of photoshop. I'm still learning things. I like experimenting, trying different blending modes on layers and creating stuff from scratch.
