The 72 ppi Web Resolution Myth
I can recommend this tutorial to all who, like me, have an incomplete understanding of resolution:

Still not convinced? Then try this:
Open one of your images in Photoshop.
Open the window Image > Image Size.
Make a note of the Image Width in pixels. In my example it is 2480 pixels.
Make sure the 'Resample Image' box is checked.
Change the resolution to 1 pixel per inch.
The Image Width and Image Height will now change.
Change the Image Width back to what it was before. The Image Size changes automatically.
Click OK.
Has your image changed? No. And why should it? It still has the same pixel dimensions as before.
That's all well and good, you say, but now it won't print!
Really? Here's the interesting bit. In the Print Window check the box marked "Scale to Fit Media".
In my example the original print resolution was 300 ppi.
Now it is 322 ppi. Why is that? I have no idea. I think you will find it prints ok. Please forgive the less than perfect photograph of me.

Hi Mariner

I only arrived at your answer when Resample Image was unchecked?

What the article says makes sense and I can understand why an image of 2480 inches (6299 cm) wouldn't print. I don't understand the 322 PPI either, but there is a fair amount of rounding going on with such a large file, it may have something to do with that?

I wouldn't worry about it too much and just work on the basis that a decent print needs 240-300 PPI at the desired size. Set the crop tool up with different sizes saved at 300, job done. From memory, it will take the chosen interpolation method as set in the image size box, i.e. Bicubic Sharper in your example.

If in doubt just make it bigger than you think you'll need!

Hi Nick. I don't understand that at all. I am using CS3 on a PC and you cannot change the width or height if Resample Image is unchecked. Perhaps they changed that in the version you are using.
