Monograms
I am having difficulty completing this exceercise.
All seems to go wrong at step 4 the layers mask clears everything except the bits of the S overlying the R and even then does not seem to paint out the areas - I am using CS 3 extended - perhaps I have a big in my sofware or is there something I am missing?

Great book - learning a lot.

Re: Monograms
Correction the part of the S I want to paint is ok but how does the rest of the R reappear (trying different things which work ok it seems as though making the S a selection seems to cause the problem)
- am I missing something basic here - I realise the book is not intended to teanch photoshop and I am awaiting the arrival of my copy of how to cheat at photoshop

Re: Monograms
When you create the layer mask for the letter R in step 4, use Create Layer Mask > Reveal All. That will create a new, empty layer mask that doesn't hide the layer at all.

You'll now be able to paint in black on that mask in the selected area, and hide just the regions that need to be hidden.

Hope this helps!

Re: Monograms
Thank you - I can now produce a reasonable monogram - working on more and also linking other shapes together.

I was using the layers mask button at the bottom of the layers palette.

The book How to Cheat in Photoshop arrived this morning - I will work through this from the begining - we always want to run before we can walk!

Kind regards

Michael

Re: Monograms
Running is the best way to learn to walk, in my opinion.

Don't let your lack of detailed knowledge hold you back!
