Photoshop conversion to Mac from PC
I am finally going to be switching to a Mac. Can I use the custom actions, styles, brushes etc. I have created on my PC and use them on a Mac by saving them to an external hard drive or burning them to a CD or an or are they OS specific? If anyone has any other advice on the change over, I would appreciate any feedback. Now I have to decide whether to upgrade to CS4 or wait for CS5 ... Thanks Steve Mac |

Re: Photoshop conversion to Mac from PC
Steve, I wasn't sure so I've just saved a brush library on CS2 on a XP machine and opened it up fine in CS3 on a Mac. So you should probably have no problem. If you've got some other presets you want me to trial you're more than welcome to email me them and I'll give them a go on my Mac. I found the change over interesting (and I'm really not trying to start a mac/pc debate here)... most issues I had were related to setting up a web development environment (apache and php server etc.) which I won't go into unless this is something you do. One thing I found was the mouse tracks differently to a PC, which frustrated the hell out of me as I've spent a good part of my life using windows. I found on the Mac that it accelerates and decelerates (some people feels this gives better precision), and their is no way of adjusting this in the standard settings panel, anyway, I couldn't get used to it so in the end I plugged my Microsoft mouse in and installed the microsoft drivers, problem solved! The other thing you might want to check is that the adobe upgrade path works when switching OS (I can't see any reason why it wouldn't but you never know... I'm unsure on this as I installed a full version to my mac). Once you get used to it the Mac OS is very nice. Good luck getting used to the icons being in slightly different places! Pete |

Hi Steve, Instead of moving files back and forth via CD or external hard drive, you could change the settings on your "My Documents, Desktop, etc" on the PC to a Shared Folder. Then plug the two computers together and on the Mac, click anywhere on the desktop and on the top menu bar click "Go" --> "Network". Your Mac should automatically find those shared folders and you can easily make the file transfer. If your computers have wireless capabilities, you don't even need to plug them in to each other. After you get all the files, you need to change the settings back on your PC in order to keep anyone from seeing the same folders (if you live close to neighbors and the PC has a wireless internet connection). I've setup an intranet between the mac & PC's at home through Ethernet, so I can use the hard drive space on the others as somewhat of a server - and data backups. You'll love the mac. |

Re: Photoshop conversion to Mac from PC
Thank you both for the insight. I really appreciate this. Do either of you recommend a support package of some kind from Apple? Is it worth it? Pete, I'm sure there will be a few differences from PC to Mac, but I am looking forward to it. When you installed your PC mouse, did you just use an installation CD that came with the mouse? Tank, I like the idea of networking the computers together, although I would have to have someone help me with that. I do have a wireless router now for my second computer. Would that be a good place to start? Thanks again Steve |

The mouse problem was the main gripe I had with moving to Mac. I found a useful little utility that seems to fix the problem, which means I can continue to use my Mighty Mouse (which I love but many people hate) |

Thanks Paul, if my biggest problem is going to be the mouse, as opposed to viruses, crashing and all the other fun things that come with a PC, I'm okay with that! Thanks |

Re: Photoshop conversion to Mac from PC
Hi Steve, I was using a old Microsoft Intellimouse, and didn't have the CD, so I downloaded the mac drivers from Microsoft’s website. I've since bought a newer Microsoft mouse and updated the drivers, and now the options panel knows which type of mouse I plug in, so I'm guessing this will only work for Microsoft mice. Paul’s solution will be best if you want to use the mighty mouse, and I'm guessing Logitech etc. might have drivers that do the same thing for their products. I guess the support question comes down to how much money you want to spend and how dependent you are on the computer, although I'm sure Apple has a healthy margin on this stuff. I'm not sure how it works in the USA, but I was able to get a 10% discount on hardware at the apple store (by buying as a business)... oh and their mark-up on the RAM is embarrassing for the sales staff (I added extra RAM that I bought from www.crucial.com, the mac store sales staff told me about them!). It will also be worth checking www.macrumors.com to see if a new model of your chosen mac is just about to be released. |
