The Adobe Illustrator
Hello everybody

I would like to learn to work with Illustrator. Can someone recommended me what is the best way to understand for its basic. Is there a book like How to cheat in ............ or book in that style?

What is your experience? Thank you for any comments.

Emil

Re: The Adobe Illustrator
That's a good question Emil and I'd like to know the same.
I've installed the trial version of illustrator some weeks ago and I found some good tutorials on abduzeedo (check out this website if you don't know about it). I'm particularly interested in 3D objects (I don't know anything about 3D).
Hope someone will be able to help.
Thank you
Stefano

Yes I agree as well!!

I think Mr Caplin should do a HTCII.

Well...he likes writing....he's very good at it... and he probably knows more about it than most people anyway!

Re: The Adobe Illustrator
Unfortunately Illustrator doesn't seem to lend itself to quite the same techniques as the 'How to Cheat' series but I seem to remember that Steve was considering the possibility of a book a couple of years ago. Did that ever get started Steve?

Illustrator for Dummies may well be a good starter to get you up to speed with the basics. I believe that the last version was for Illustrator CS but this will be perfectly ok to learn the tools, techniques etc.

In the meantime you could do a lot worse than 'The Illustrator WOW Book' series by Sharon Steuer. It doesn't really cater for the absolute beginner as it assumes a certain amount of knowledge of the programme, but once you have that knowledge combined with knowing how Photoshop works, you will be up and running fairly quickly. And some of the artwork is really worth paying the money for if only for inspiration.

It's a programme that I don't use very often but it produces fantastic results.

Re: The Adobe Illustrator
You have a good memory, Gordon.

Yes, I did start working on How to Cheat in Illustrator, and I wrote a couple of sample chapters to show how the book would be structured. In the course of doing this, it became clear to me that this book would be a phenomenal amount of work, since Illustrator is a much less forgiving program than Photoshop. Looking at the potential market for it, I felt I just couldn't justify the time it would have taken.

Perhaps one day I'll revisit the project. Until then... best of luck finding a good alternative!

Many thanks for your comments,

Thank you for tips Gordon, I have ordered the books at Amazon.

I have already downloaded some free vectors graphic. I though that the work in Illustrator will be similar to the Photoshop but it is not (in my point of view). It will be another long way to achieve some experiences in it :-)))

You are quite right Emil. It is true to say that you can do some work in Photoshop that would have a similar look to Illustrator when you use Photoshop's vector shapes but the look of an Illustrator project will be radically different to the norm in Photoshop. Some might say it is just too crisp and clean.

Two major advantages of Illustrator over Photoshop are (1) much smaller file sizes as everything is calculated mathematically rather than on a pixel by pixel basis and (2) Because everything is based on vectors it is infinitely scaleable so you are not working to a fixed resolution as in Photoshop.

Re: The Adobe Illustrator
Lynda.com have some great video tutorials on Illustrator. I learnt so much in a very short time.

Not having used it for two years I have forgotten nearly all but it was a great way to learn.
