Rainy Looking Sky
I thought I'd share this, it was taken outside my house a few minutes ago, just before a really heavy shower of rain.

I finally got around to getting a camera, and I'm having great fun with it so far. Just waiting for a dry day to go for a ramble and take some pics. (Dry weather.. in Ireland.. yeah right!! )

Yeah C'mon, you just dropped in a grey layer...own up!

Actually, I think this pic is great, I love the way sun appears to be just picking out the house, I'm sure you could have great fun with this.

Cheers

Re: Rainy Looking Sky
Nope, no grey layers! Although since the sky looks like this most of the time, it's no great feat of photography

But I'll take more interesting pics as soon as we get an hour or two of non-rain. There's the ruins of a very old castle in the field next door to my house, and I'm looking forward to getting a few good photos of it finally.
Even if it means I have to sneak past a field full of bulls to get the pics... watch this space.

We'll watch this space, you watch your back with them there bulls.

Plus, I don't think your next door neighbour's would be very happy if they knew you were calling their place a ruin!

Sure there's no fun in being too careful But if there's still people living in that castle, then I'll be in more danger from them than the bulls!!
Apparently the castle was meant to be one of the most important in that region, and the only one with a 'murder pit' somewhere around the side walls. We all found this very fascinating as kids. We went tramping around there, jumping up and down, trying to find it. It never dawned on us that we could actually fall in and impale ourselves on the spikes. Grisly. But I was always really disappointed that I was never able to find it... does that make me a gorey and unusual sort of girl?

Re: Rainy Looking Sky
suppose it could make you a Gory-Girl but I thought you were a Cork-Girl!

My Granddad was a Cork Man but was taken off to India when he was just a toddler. But the name of Riordan is very well known in certain parts of Calcutta, as his two brother were Jesuit Monks and worked at spreading the word there I guess.

good luck with the camera

Celia, enjoy your camera work. Amazing weather today. I like the moody weather, when the camera (and operator*-*) can cope with it *~*
You've done a great job. Enjoy.

Har har Anna

I'm back from the Castle ramble, and I ended up with 170 pics! Not bad for a newbie, so I'm pleased. And no bulls either.
Pics need tweaking in Photoshop, flash made everything very white, but I'll post some as soon as I've sorted them out and resized a bit.

Thanks for all the encouragement.

Re: Rainy Looking Sky
Thank you Nick!

I've uploaded the pics to Flickr, because there's too many for here. Some of them didn't turn out that well, and others I'm very happy with, but considering it was my second day with a camera, I was pleased they turned out at all!!!
Castle is pretty run down and overgrown now, but still beautiful in it's own way.. despite the masses of pigeon poop. (Mega gross.)
I managed to narrowly avoid falling through the trick step, and very narrowly avoid falling in through the hole at the very top. Not sure if the fall would have finished me off first, or the pigeon poop.........
Anyway, here's one for now, and the rest are here for those who are interested.

(P.s. Still no sign of Murder Pit.)

Re: Rainy Looking Sky
Lovely images Celia and looks to be a great camera. Can you let us know what it is?

I love the shot you have posted, particularly the lead in lines and the contrast. How about a mono conversion to add some bite?. This was done quickly using selective levels adjustments, B&W adjustment layer to darken the cyan and boost the greens / yellows. Followed by a B&W gradient map at low opacity. Merged the layers and then minor dodge and burn on a copy layer. I do hope you don't mind, but such a great subject to work with.

Nick

Re: Rainy Looking Sky
Thanks for all your lovely comments on the pics! Much appreciated.

Thanks Mark, nice to see a fellow Flickr-er! I'm a newbie, but I like it there so far. You have some lovely photos, I love the one of the dog in the garden, and the little green cricket is wicked, that really made me smile! Brilliant close-ups, I really like those a lot.

Thanks for the comments Gordon and Nick!
Nick you did a lovely job on the Mono version, it really does add something special to it. Very evocative, and thank you for the tips, I'll have to have a look at that at home when I'm on my holidays.

The camera is a very humble little Samsung ES15; I found a special offer on it on Amazon and thought that it might be a nice easy camera to get started on, because I've never owned a digital one before. I'm so glad I went with it, it's a very sturdy camera, and the pics from it are superb. The castle pics were taken on the 5MP setting, as the maximum 10MP pics were humongous. Most shots were taken on the 'auto' setting, and some of the scenery shots were taken on the 'landscape' setting. The default settings take such nice photos that I don't really have to get too fiddley with the settings yet, which is great for a beginner. I took a total of 170 pics and the battery life was superb. All in all I'm really pleased with it for a first camera!

Powerslave the parties in the castle have been done too Usually Hallowe'en ones, and it was all fun and games until some drunk idiot fell through the hole in the roof and broke his leg years back. Ouch. It's hard enough climbing up there fully sober, in the middle of a bright sunny day. I have noooo idea how that guy managed to get to the top in the black dark while blind drunk! Dumb luck maybe!

Celia,

thanks for the kind words about my pics. The dog is Rosie a longhaired miniature Dachshund (head of the family)!
I'm sure that as you get more used to your camera, you will continue produce more and more lovely pics, enjoy and take it everywhere with you!!

@Gordon,
Thanks Gordon, gosh I am so Dumb! Imagine me 'behind the wheel' of an aeroplane?

Adobe AfterEffects - plugins that ship with AE that were used: CC Mr. Mercury (rain drops on window effect), CC Rain (Rain effect of course) and CC Advanced Lightning (for the lightning).
