Absence
Hello everyone, been really busy trying to keep my job which was under threat for the fifth time in 2 years. I won't feel safe till the end of October but I have been given a third job to do on top of the two I am doing. There's lots of it and I don't think I will be made redundant unlike many gifted colleagues. The principal of the college resigned today because he'd made such a mess of the finances. Lots of things going on like union meetings and strikes. but not involved with those.

I'm taking a photography course over the next six months and loving it. I left my cosy warm flat last night for the dark, cold, wet streets of Tunbridge Wells with a dodgy tripod and weak torch.

Here's a couple of pictures of my second granddaughter aged 18 months and taken very recently.

Re: Absence
Sophie,

So sorry to hear of your job situation - it must be very worrying. We live in difficult times.

Photography is a great alternative to real life, and your course could be just the distraction you need. I like the photos of your granddaughter! You need to watch the way you do your blurs, though, as it's very common for some of the colour in the crisp area (such as the bright pink clothes) to leak into the blurred area behind, which rather gives the game away. I find it helps to paint that colour out on the blur layer.

She is very cute Sophie She is about a year younger than mine

I hope things are ok regarding the work situation. Very stressful. If its any consolation..my philosophy is things always work out as they should. In the meantime enjoy the photography!!

Re: Absence
I totally agree with you Anna. I have just been offered additional work and may end up being seriously busy which would be great.

Hi Sophie,
Glad to hear you have been offered additional work. They really have messed you around a lot - get a pay rise!
I agree with Anna's philosophy.

Re: Absence
Maybe this is a solution (for the depth of field):

• Make a background copy.
• On the copy try to keep 2 or 3 pixels from the outher edge to make the little girl's selection and maybe make a mask of this selection on a new channel (save selection). The selection (girl) is white, the surrounding black obviously).
• Make a separate layer of the selection (layer 2) that keeps only the girl.
• Keep the 'ants running' and reverse the selection.
• Select layer 1 (ants still running) and blurrrrr with Lens blur (Radius15 %).
• For a little more photographic effect you could use the filter Other»Minimum (Radius 1 or 2%) afterwards.
Make sure to make the toplayer (2) visual (especially with existing hair).
• Ctrl»D and that's it (and go on with your new hobby!)
