Reality and illusion, May 2
I'm doing a lecture for the East Anglia branch of the Royal Photographic Society in Blideston, Suffolk, on May 2. I believe non-members are allowed in, in case any of you are around that area. Details here: http://www.rps.org/events/view/1501?m=0&y=2010&d=&t=0&g=0&r=East%20Anglia&reset=reset |

Non-members are allowed in. I'm trying to attend, it sounds very interesting and it's not too far from London. |

Excellent! As well as doing a regular Photoshop demo, I'll also be giving an illustrated talk on the ethics of photomontage (a pet obsession of mine), as well as giving a sneak preview of Photoshop CS5. Should be an interesting day. |

The ethics of photo montage are sort of an obsession of mine too. I read an excellent book on the subject last year - not sure if it's been translated into English. However, I've got my ticket an look forward to the event. ![]() |

Eggbox has just scrambled in for next Sunday. Looking forward to it. After this week's challenge the ethics of photomontage could be interesting! Ted |

Re: Reality and illusion, May 2
Thanks a lot for a very interesting workshop on reality and illusion and intro to CS5! I tried to find out what had happened to the mysteriously disappeared lighting effects filter. I think the latest version of OSX (new laptop?) is incompatible with certain features in CS5. Apple's website states that 'Snow Leopard takes the next big step by rewriting nearly all system applications in 64-bit code...' http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/ ... while Adobe's online help (on the lighting effects filter in CS5) states the following: 'Note: The Lighting Effects filter works only on RGB images and is unavailable in 64-bit versions of Mac OS.' http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-7959a.html#WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-7958a This wouldn't be too bad if CS5 worked on 'older' Macs. Let's hope Adobe will fix this glitch by the time I've saved enough money to buy CS5. From what we saw yesterday It's certainly worth buying - lighting or no lighting. |

Glad you enjoyed it! A good day, I thought. I've figured out the Lighting Effects thing - it seems it doesn't work on the Mac in 64-bit, you have to restart Photoshop in 32-bit in order to get it to show up. Wish I'd known that on Sunday! |

Is that going to mean a change to pages in your new book? T |

Yes, of course - I'll get a note in there before this edition goes to press. It's with the proofreaders now, although I'm thinking of pulling out one of the old spreads to replace it with one on making Gordon Brown smile - if I can work out how to do it, that is! |

Variations is also a 32bit only plugin. I guess they just never bothered or thought it was too hard or not worth re-writing those parts for 64bit versions. |
