Live webinar: Layer Styles
I'm delighted to announce my next live webinar with Retouch Pro, which is Wednesday 21st September: http://www.retouchpro.com/index.php?page=caplin It's all about Layer Styles, including Advanced Blending, covering everything you need to know. I've discovered a few interesting new features myself while researching this piece - including a way of masking layers that doesn't involve layer masks. I hope you'll be able to make it - it should be a lot of fun. |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Steve, interesting webinar. Doug seemed to be throwing you many curve balls to test both your comprehension and Photoshop abilities but of course you dealt admirably in both areas. I particularly enjoyed the neon lettering and fishing line examples. Please could you explain again where that "shape burst" option to create the illusion of roundness is as I cannot now find it and I had never seen it before. I would be interested to see how much more can be achieved with the layer styles on the 3d layer bump maps. Good to hear about the new book in the pipeline. Cheers Vern |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Glad you enjoyed it. I'm constantly surprised by how much you can get out of Layer Styles. The Shape Burst is an option when you choose Gradient as the fill type in the Stroke pane. It wraps the gradient around the perimeter of the shape. Extremely useful! When you add a layer style to the 3D layer bump maps, it's just the same as if you were painting on the bump map - whatever you produce is wrapped around the object. Interesting to see the results, all the same. |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Great webinar, especially I liked the feature Knock out of layer style. I tried it today morning. It worked but when I wanted to see differences between deep and shallow I did not see anything even I grouped the layers. Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Knockout takes a bit of getting used to. Here's how it works: set to Deep, it will knock out all the way down to the Background layer. Set to Shallow, it will knock out through the bottom layer of the current Group, but no further. I can see I'll have to write this one up in the next edition of How to Cheat... Glad you enjoyed the show! |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Steve, thanks for the inspiration. I have been trying out different variations of layer styles. Here is one with a few including the shape burst gradient to the stroke. I like the way the the edge of the letters has some substance but also that the letter edges merge into each other. Cheers Vern ![]() |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Glad to see you're been playing with layer styles! Yes, the shape burst really is an interesting one. But I'm not sure you can condense the text that much without it complaining... |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Steve, sorry I'm being a bit thick and not understanding your comment about "condense the text that much". I made the edges of the text flow into each other by reducing the kerning between the letters but I am not sure if that is what you are referring to. |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
No, it's the fact that the text has been squeezed to much horizontally. It's a typography issue, not a Layer Effects one! |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Thanks Steve for last nights webinar. I did know a fair bit about loads of the settings, contours etc but have to say that I struggled a bit with the knockout workings and the fishing line example. I'd had a long day at work already and the grey matter was flagging. So I may have to watch the replay a couple of times to take it in. Sophie |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Is shape burst a 3D thing, only I cannot see it in styles? Nick |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Hello Nick, In Layer Styles, go to Stroke, then change Fill Type to Gradient rather than Colour. Then click on Style and Shape Burst should be there. |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Ah found it - thanks Deborah. It looks really useful, particularly if you reduce fill to 0% Nick |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
I agree that styles are an incredibly powerful tool and can produce wonderful effects when combined with a mask. This is the famous logo with a chisel bevel applied with colour overlay. A mask was applied with Difference Clouds. A levels adjustment was then made to the mask to increase the contrast. A duplicate of the logo was then placed below the original logo and the colour changed to red. Nick ![]() |

Re: Live webinar: Layer Styles
Sorry I could not make this webinar. I enjoy seeing them live. But now at least we/Europe can also download/rent a version. (see retouchpro) Like the chisel Nick! Fyi, in my ignorance here is something I created a few years ago while messing with styles .... err.. maybe a bit OTT ![]() |
