Just Finished Setting The Scene, at last !
Hi, I am new to Photoshop and in a rash moment bought 100% Photoshop, best buy every! Have been working through the first few pages and finally finished this tonight. I couldn't help changing a couple of things, just like to play I guess. Had a few problems and had to fumble my way through, but overall I am happy with it. The only thing I couldn't work out was the vertical lines on the window. I could make the lines but not get the gradient to go sideways instead of up and down. The short cut keys didn't seem to work for me. I have a new Mac and it doesn't seem to like some of the Mac shortcuts in the book. I had to draw it all with a mouse as well so I didn't get it all as clean as I would like it. The lower wallpaper is not as small as I wanted it and the wood on the door is a new variety, just haven't named it yet ! I would welcome any comments as after awhile I can't see it to see whats not right. Thanks a lot. ![]() ![]() |

HI Jacqui, Welcome to the forum!! Overall, I think you did a great job. Here are some of the things that I notice. 1. I'm not sure what version of photoshop you are using but, creating the vertical lines in step 15 is easy to do. Just create a vertical selection. Make sure your foreground color is black and the background color is white. Select the Gradient tool and select the Linear Gradient in options tool bar. ONce you created your selection, start from the right edge of the selection and hold the Shift key and drag to the center of the selection. NOw just duplicate as shown in step 16. 2. For The inner window shape, I would just add a little more blur to it 3. For the 3 light rays, I would add more blur to make the edges softer. Luis |

Terrific work, Jacqui! That's really looking food. I agree with all Luis' comments, as well. Sorry to hear you've been having some problems, though. When you say you can't make some of the keyboard shortcuts work, can you remember which ones? I use a Mac as well, and as far as I know they do all work as described. Let us know where you're having problems and we can try to help you out. Welcome to the forum! Steve |

Re: Just Finished Setting The Scene, at last !
Thanks for the feedback. I have taken it on board and will have another go. Unfortunately I seem to have flattened the image so I can't make the changes on this one. I will make a note of the shortcuts that I can't get to work. I am sure it's just me. Still can't get the gradient to work. I'm sure it's not that difficult. I am using ps cs5, so don't know if that makes a difference. When I go to make the vertical lines I use the selection tool, then on the right of my screen is a choice of boxes for the gradient, I click on the black/white one but when I go back to drag across my selection, pushing shift as I do it, it just tries to make another box! Thanks again Jacqui |

Jacqui, Do you think you can take a screen capture of the area you are having problems? There is something wrong, but I don't know whats going on without seeing your screen. The only thing that I can say is use the selection tool to create the vertical line and then select the gradient tool. Then select the type of gradient. Do not select any other tool and make sure the gradient tool is selected. Then create you gradient. Luis |

This does sound very strange. It sounds to me as if you're selecting the Marquee tool again after choosing the Gradient tool. As Luis says, can you post a screen grab to show us how your setup looks at the point you're trying to draw the gradient? |

Re: Just Finished Setting The Scene, at last !
I have just found out what I was doing wrong. Call me thick! Have been fiddling around and finally sorted it. So my next attempt will have the correct window. Thanks so much for your help, it stopped me giving up, knowing that I can ask the question without feeling stupid. I will post my next attempt when its finished. Best wishes to all Jacqui |
