Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
I'm having trouble with this step, specifically Step 7 on page 209. I've completed Step 6 by making a clipping mask of the texture on the stones layer and applying a bevel. Not sure if this is correct, since the directions don't mention a clipping mask, but that's what worked. But Step 7 won't work for me, no matter what I try. I could really use some very specific instructions here, for copying and pasting the texture into the layer mask, since I can't make it look like it does in the picture, and this is the whole effect. |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Tom, You're right, I seem to have missed out a step there. Here are the full instructions: 1. Go to the texture layer, Select All, and Copy. 2. Switch into QuickMask mode (Q). 3. Paste the texture. 4. Exit QuickMask. 5. Make a new, blank layer mask for the stone layer (Reveal All). 6. Use alt-backspace to fill the layer mask with the selection that's currently active (the one made in QuickMask). Hope this works for you. Very sorry about the confusion, I'll make sure this is fixed in future editions. Congratulations on having got so far through the book! Steve |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Hi Steve, Thanks for the quick reply; I'm really enjoying your book and learning Photoshop much better. The instructions above were definitely helpful in getting through Step 7, although I think there could be more explanation in the book about what is being done here. For me, it's following instructions without understanding the concepts behind them. Additionally, when I move on to Step 8, I end up with things looking just like they did in Step 6; I've attached a screenshot of the before & after, including the Layers palette so you can see "under the hood." I appreciate your help! ![]() |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Yes, I agree more explanation would help - if only there were more space! What's happening here is that the cloud texture is affecting the layer mask, producing a random masking effect. Great looking stone, by the way. Be sure to show us the finished image. |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Thanks, using the clouds to randomize the masking makes sense, and your steps helped me through Step 7. However, I don't think I'm getting through Step 8 correctly; the clouds are now only randomizing the shading, as in Step 6; the texture is entirely from the bevel. I'm running CS3, so maybe something differs in achieving the randomized texture, as seen in the book. |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Yes, that's right: it's the randomness in the bevel that produces the shading effect. On a few of your stones, those where the disabled mask is chiefly black, you can see the variation in the bevel. Maybe you should try adding the Clouds filter to the mask a couple more times - hold the alt key to get a tighter pattern - and see if more black in the mask produces the effect we want. |

Re: Chapter 8: Texturing the Stone
Thanks again, Steve; I haven't tried this yet, but saved a copy of the house for further experimentation. It makes sense; the clouds filter being used for this kind of 3D texture is introduced in this chapter, is that correct? It's a very cool concept, I'll give it another shot. |
