QuickMask issues
Hi, I am working through chapter 8 and I have run into a problem early. I can't seem to lift the clouds from the black in the quickmask. In the book, the clouds appear pink, but I can't get that to happen. I'm also confused on exactly how to paste once I'm in the quickmask. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: QuickMask issues
Hi Tim, Welcome to the HTCIPS Forum I don't use quick mask very often. I tried following Steve's steps as well and it did not work for me. Well I could get to work but added more complexity, which I am sure was not the intent. I did not have much more time to explore. Other QM guys might. (I was using CS5) Anyway, as always in PS there are many ways to get a same/similar solution. I love masks, non-destructive to the layer pixels and can always edit later especially quickly with latest CS4/CS5 tools, though PS7 can do same. So I offer you an alternative approach, based on Steve's tutorial . I assume you have cleared Steps 1 - 3 okay. My suggestions will just give you alternative route for 4 and 5, based on Steve's tutorial as much as I can. I'm using CS5, but these steps should apply to much earlier versions as well. After step 3, you need to create two new layers based off Steve's suggestion. 1) The graduated blue - light/faded blue layer using gradient tool, I call it Layer 1.. 2) Above that I call it Layer 2, create the filled grey layer as Steve says. On layer 2 the idea is to create a mask based off what you created on your background layer after step 3. The layer mask will reveal, with transparency the sky below and highlight the clouds, though you will need to follow through with steps 6 onwards to finish. Turn all the eyeballs off for the layers apart from background. Open the Channels tab (its next to Layers). Once this is open, at the bottom of the window is Load Channel as a Selection button. (dashed circle). Hit it. This will make a selection based off graduation of your background. Leave it selected (marching ants). Go back to Layers tab. Turn on all the eyeballs for Layer 1 & 2 again. Select Layer 2. Then go Layer > Layer Mask >Reveal Selection. That should create a new layer mask for the clouds i.e. see the sky below as well as the clouds. You could leave the selection active and follow through on steps 6 and 7, or to get back to what Steve achieved (I think), Apply the Layer Mask. The mask will go and just leave the layer with the range of transparencies. I think you can go straight to Step 6 and 7, i.e. leave my alternative route and back to mainline ![]() (I'd keep the mask and do the shading/highlight on new clipping mask layers above, but that is my style and difficult to explain over two pages of Steve's excellent book). If you need any clarification of this please let me know. Either way others may be able to help. Trevor |

Re: QuickMask issues
Tim, This appears to be an error in the instructions (and you're the first person to spot it). In step 4 on page 199, after Select All you need to Copy before entering QuickMask, where you can then Paste. Hope this helps, and thanks for bringing it to my attention Steve |
