I've never used grids before and can't see how to get the 1s and 0s into the boxes properly.

Sorry Bobby Jo, I tried to keep my explanation as concise as possible so that people weren't put off but that can lead to other problems.

Turn on the grid by ticking View/Show/Grid
Go to Edit/Preferences/Guides, Grid & Slices
Set 'Gridline every:' to 25 pixels
Set 'Subdivisions:' to 1

The grid is now the correct size and it will show on all layers (but it is not part of your picture), you can turn it off anytime by un-ticking View/Show/Grid.

Turn on 'Snap to Grid' by ticking View/Snap To/Grid and by ticking View/Snap

Zoom into your picture so that you can see the individual squares of the grid.

Now for the text.

With the 'Type Tool' type a single '0' and adjust the size until it will fit comfortably into a grid square.
With the 'Move Tool' you will see that when you drag it about, it will snap to the left, right, top or bottom of a grid square.
Hold down the 'Alt' key and use the 'Move Tool' to duplicate and position another '0', keep on repeating this say ten times leaving spaces between some of the '0's. Type a single '1' in the first space and duplicate this to fill in all the other spaces.
Now you can 'Rasterize' them (right click on the Type layers and choose 'Rasterize Type') then merge all the layers into one.
Use the 'Alt' key and 'Move Tool' to duplicate and position this new layer to fill up a full line on the grid, then merge these so that you can copy a full line at once. Merge and duplicate a few more times and you will soon fill the grid.

Better still, use this pattern [Attachment: Binary1.pat (30.22kb)] to fill the grid with 1s and 0s using Edit/Fill/Pattern.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Well this was not easy but I did not give up. I was about to hit send with my version when I had a thought of how to make the numbers only one shade. It's not perfect, but at least I managed!
Thank you Steve for taxing our brains. This one truly was difficult and I'm sure you will give us some simple way to do it! I sure couldn't find one.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Great work! The explanations from Rufus and Pierre are excellent, but perhaps a little over complex. Here's the simple method:

1. Begin by setting up a grid. You can set the size using Preferences > Guides, Grids & Slices. The size is up to you; here, I've used a 12 pixel grid. Now choose View > Show > Grid.

2. Make a new text box, and type in a load of numbers. (Actually, it doesn't have to be 1 and 0; any numbers can be used, as they're all monospaced in just about every font). Adjust the size, leading and tracking until they fit the grid perfectly; or rasterize the type layer, and adjust by hand.

When you have a block of numbers that fits, duplicate it to flll your image - either by dragging copies, or by defining it as a pattern first.

3. Choose a picture - here's Marilyn Monroe. It needs to be fairly high contrast to work well, and mono pictures will work better than colour.

4. Now use the Mosaic filter (Filter > Pixellate > Mosaic) with a cell size that exactly matches your grid: in this case, it's 12. This is the key to the problem!

5. That's all very well, but there are too many different shades in there. So use the Posterize filter to reduce that to, say, 3 or 4 levels.

6. Change the background and number colours as you wish. Light numbers on a dark background work well.

7. This is the simplest final step: change the mode of the treated photograph to Multiply, so it darkens all those numbers. Nothing to it!

Alternatively, you may want to treat each gradation of colour in a different way. Select one of the grey tones from the photograph with the Magic Wand, then choose Select > Similar to pick up all the same colour squares. Switch to the Numbers layer and make a new layer from that selection (you'll need to rasterize the numbers first if you haven't already done so). Then each tone can be coloured and treated as a separate layer: this is the method I used with my original photograph, posted last Friday.

Give it a go!

Brilliant Steve!

The extra step using posterize really simplifies the job.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
I knew I did it the hard way. I got posterize right but didn't use mozaic or grid. I made masks of each area and then manually changed the mask to make the numbers all one color!!!

Dare I try it again, the 'easy' way?

Rufus

I dutifully copied the binary.pat file into the Patterns folder, so when I did not see it appear in the Styles palette, I got the old Preset Manager out, and selected one of the 01010 patterns and loaded saved. and loaded, and saved. The dialogue box (showing the Patterns folder) did not display "binary.pat" and then it looked at me as if I was stupid. Is the dialog box correct?

Mike

Mike,

First of all delete the Binary.pat file and replace it with Binary1.pat, there was an error in the first one. Patterns do not appear in the styles palette, you can see them by using Edit/Fill/Pattern then clicking on custom pattern then on the small triangle on the right, this will open a drop down menu containing Binary1.

Alternatively double click on Binary1 and it will install the pattern at the end of the current set.

I must be really stupid but I cannot align the numbers to the grid I don't know what leading and tracking is. I type in a load of numbers and then use free transform to scale the text layer but nothing lines up. Help please I'm goung nuts!!!!!!

Your grid doesn't seem to line up. You still have digits of more thanone shade
