Thanks for the info Rufus.

Now there! Everybody suddenly feels better about their own contributions.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Your grid doesn't seem to line up. You still have digits of more thanone shade

In that case I haven't got a scooby doo I followed the instructions as best I could. Don't know why some have differing tones Anybody know ?

Well it was a bit of a challenge and no error. My cider bottle is empty and my teddy isn't speaking to me Looking back on it though I stuck with it, largely due to the chaps and chapettes on the forum helping me along but I threw my mouse around a bit (but not my Wacom tablet). Now where did I throw my dummy? All good fun and a learning experience as I say when losing at poker. Keep it up Steve

Yes, I felt that way too but now Steve has revealed the method along with others in the forum generously sharing their own methods we can digitise ourselves and our favourite pickies to our hearts content. I will digitise my local pup tomorrow which will involve a lengthy research period inside

Well, before I have to hit the catnip,I'd better post this.(And you thought yours looked like Paint-by-Number,CW.)I've run out of time for this week.I wonder if I had used a bigger overall file,if it wouldn't look so jagged?)
Instructions for Use:Stand back...stand waaaayyyy back!

This is my contribution to this weeks challenge. For those of you who might wonder who this is, there's a clue somewhere.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Well, this was a tricky one! But as I pointed out, Photoshop is all about problem solving. I was pleased when I worked out the technique, especially as I was on a three hour deadline and didn't have time to mess about. It's good to see so many of you managed to arrive at the same results!

Lexus put in the first entries, with a very graphic interpretation: a good effect, especially given that it seems to have been done 'by hand', one digit at a time.

The first real solution came from Rufus, with the added bonus of large numbers made of the binary digits. And a great explanation that followed, too. In terms of impact, though, I preferred the original, negative image to the second entry.

The entry from mr.pbody didn't follow the format, but was still intriguing. The Fibonacci sequence in binary form? I wouldn't have recognized it! And is that Da Vinci hand painted? A great image.

Several good entrues from Paul 2005, whose graphic approach produced some really strong results. And the third entry really captures the idea well.

A refreshingly different approach from yuvalbra - a good image, although not in the specified style. When you duplicate bands of numbers, watch out for the spacing! Too many horizontal lines in here distract the eye.

An interesting Warhol-type image from Dave, which doesn't follow the requirements - but does produce a very effective result.

Kenney got the technique exactly right - but what a weird starting image! Something about that smile really haunts me!

An all too rare entry from David Asch got the technique exactly, including the posterize effect: more than that, the starting image was exactly the right sort of thing for this technique.

Great work, too, from CWBasset, with a perfect technique. Do your dogs really have ears that long? Don't they trip over them when they run??? Something very weird going on in the background in the second entry, though!

Somehow, I had a feeling Pierre might use a mini this week. A great effect, but slightly too much tonal variation for my liking; the vertical bands work well, though, and add great interest.

I greatly enjoyed Char's entry. A very entertaining approach! And there's a luminous quality to the second entry that really makes it stand out.

A great choice of subject from Dek_101: Charles Babbage, I believe, the "inventor" of the computer. The Science Museum in London actually built one of his Difference Engines recently, the first time it had ever been done (Babbage himself attempted it, but couldn't get the funding to complete the job). I went to see it in action, but on the day I was there it was broken. Just like modern computers, eh?

A very close entry from Pauline - but were the digits hand painted here? A few of the numbers are cut through, beneath the chin, for instance, which makes me think this one wasn't as automated as I'd intended.

Glad that Bobby Jo managed to enter this week, after all that head scratching! The grid didn't quite match the numbers - but the second entry got it exactly right.

Michael Sinclair's entry also shows a slight mismatch between the numbers and the mosaic grid. Damn, it's hard to get those numbers to line up!

A very strong image from Tom, although a dark background behind the skull would have made it stand out that much better.

The right technique from Raffy, except that the numbers are contained within coloured squares, rather than changing shade themselves. Much more detail in the second entry - now all you have to do is reproduce it in needlework!

Still looking for the "clue" in Whaler's Tony Blair. Am I missing something obvious? This isn't yet another Da Vinci Code puzzle, is it?

Fantastic work from everyone this week. You'll be glad to know we'll be back to normal after this!

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Well, the clue wasn't in the picture this time, rather in the file name. Not very obvious, of course, but if you had tried to save or download the file, it would have been very obvious.

Re: Contest 98: Playing the numbers
Ah Steve, alas after looking at number so long I didn't notice the bottom of the numbers cut off at the chin. I had a page full of numbers and made a layer mask for each colour and copied each section to a new layer and changed the hue/saturation of each layer on it's own!! I guess I didn't do a very good job with the masking!!
