The only issue I see with that Steve is that the RSPCA may become involved and possibly the Police if you decide to chop up a horse on a public forum

I don't know, Damien Hirst got away with it

Re: Reflections
Perhaps this could be another Friday Challenge - Advanced Reflection work where we must hover something above a reflective surface. *shrugs*

I did a little equestrian calendar for 2005 and one of the original ideas I wanted to try, was the one in the book with the lady in red, walking through the picture frame over water (reflective surface) - I wanted to have one of our horses jumping through a similar frame over water - the reflection beat me, no matter how subtle I tried to make it, it looked 'out of place'. I tried roughing up the water (cheating) but that didn't look so hot either and lost the whole point of what I was trying to do. The horse having so much breadth, has a whole underneath structure that should have been in the reflection. I might still be struggling with it for 2008!
It is heartening to hear that even the experts find it difficult. I am learning lots on this forum, thanks.

That's the problem I'm having with my jumper. No matter what I do, it dosen't look right.

Aha! That's in a different thread. How confusing!

I started this in regard to this weeks challenge (for1-21-05).

Re: Reflections
I had about ten versions of this - all of which were disasters. I had no 'made up' versions left (all deleted accompanied by words my mother never let me use). This is close to the last one I did - I had kept all the elements in my "really must learn how to do that" file.
I tried various backgrounds and various frames - the original frame was meant to be foliage, representing a type of cross country jump called a 'keyhole'.

Re: Reflections
I think because the reflection is on water and there is a degree of ripple which can be seen with the reflection of the foliage (bottom left) then you can get away with some Ocean Ripple and and a more generalised horse shape

Re: Reflections
Oh yes, that is much better. I tried 'wave' but it didn't work.
There is also something totally wrong where the back leg of the horse and the frame join but I couldn't work it out - there was a lack of depth I think. Now that I have been listening on the forum I wondered if I should have blurred the background within the frame a bit?
thanks again.

Re: Reflections
I am sorry to be a pain, but could you tell me how you achieved the effect of the shadow - my ocean ripple and your ocean ripple are not remotely alike.

Re: Reflections
Yes, Using the pen tool I created the rough shape of the horse as I would expect it to look from underneath. I created a selection from the pen tool and filled with a colour sampled from the horse in a new layer above the original layer. I added some Guassian Blur to bur the shape. Then using the Healing Brush set to Color mode and ensuring "Aligned" & "Use All Layers" are checked I took a sample from the water layer and painted directly over the shadow to copy the ripple texture to the shadow layer - this doesn't give a true effect of a reflection yet until I then added Distort>Ocean Ripple with the Ripple Size set to a small amount and the Magintude to about 11 or so.

Try different settings and apply the Ocean Ripple filter a couple of times to get the right look.

Re: Reflections
This was my second attempt - better than the original but it doesn't have the realistic cold 'don't want to fall in' ,that your water has. I missed out all the early stuff and went straight for the ocean ripple. I will try out all the neat stuff you list above.
Thanks again.

Re: Reflections
I don't know yours seems to have come out pretty realistic although the shadow could do with fattening up a tad as the horse looks a bit anorexic towards the back end.

Re: Reflections
And believe me, this is no anorexic horse

Thanks - if I had found this forum a few months ago, I might have been able to do enough to this picture to use it. In my original idea, the reflection of the frame was going to frame the shadow and be the outside edges of the lower cut out.....that was until I tried the whole sky and floor thing from the book (well...it reads like I should be able to do it) and decided to cheat and go for the 'real' water as a background. Your bit on your tutorial about locked backgrounds and how to access them came in very handy. I had not worked that out when I originally tried this last year and was frustrated by my inablity to adjust the background layer.
