Reflections
I'm watching a basketball game tonight, and I realize that my floor in this weeks entry is wrong, wrong, wrong! Basketball floors are shiny! Do'h! One problem is what do you do with a person that is at an angle? I tried the Apple-shift method without luck. Do you need to break the image into sections? Also jumping. You would need to reflect the bottom of the jumper, a shadow won't do. I just know a bunch of you guys have good ideas. Thanks. Jeff |

Re: Reflections
Yes, the courts are shiny but they're not mirrors, so you'd really only need to show the reflection up to the player's knees at the most and then it could be faded out, which would allow you to get away with some 2D restricted artistic license ![]() _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Re: Reflections
Thanks David. I think I can make that work with this image. In the book, Steve mentions that "it's not a job for the faint-hearted". Perhaps in the next book there will be more detail as to how it's done. (What if it WAS a mirror?) |

Re: Reflections
Yes, I will be looking more at reflections - in particular, at reflections of complex objects. It's about the hardest thing you can do convincingly in PS, which is why I steered clear of it first time around! |

Re: Reflections
I think convincing reflections on oblique surfaces can be dealt with easier if we had access to a Free Transform Envelope tool. As in this case with the dalek reflections I had to go through steps to create as best I could a convincing reflection using the very limited Shear tool. ![]() as you can see as the Shear filter doesn't have a 'live preview' I've had to roughly guess the concaved shape of the reflection. But even with an Envelope tool there is still the problem of filling in missing detail when the subject is raised off the surface and you can see (in reflection) the underside. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Reflections
Becky, that's a really impressive piece of reflection. And you really do come up with great gags! |

Re: Reflections
Thanks, Steve. In my case the humour comes first and then I have the uphill struggle of trying to create the scene as best as I can imagine it - which is where it sometimes falls apart. ![]() _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Reflections
The main thing you'll need to tke into account is that at the angle we're viewing the scene, you'd be able to see the soles of the shoes, so a little creative pen tool may be needed. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Reflections
I was talking about the original source of this thread, the fox basketball image, the soles of the fox's trainers would be visible in the reflection on the floor. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Re: Reflections
I did a little equestrian calendar for 2005 and one of the original ideas I wanted to try, was the one in the book with the lady in red, walking through the picture frame over water (reflective surface) - I wanted to have one of our horses jumping through a similar frame over water - the reflection beat me, no matter how subtle I tried to make it, it looked 'out of place'. I tried roughing up the water (cheating) but that didn't look so hot either and lost the whole point of what I was trying to do. The horse having so much breadth, has a whole underneath structure that should have been in the reflection. I might still be struggling with it for 2008! It is heartening to hear that even the experts find it difficult. I am learning lots on this forum, thanks. |

Re: Reflections
Eventer, If you can post a copy of the image in the forum, maybe we could help with the reflections? _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Re: Reflections
All depends on the angle from which the horse was photographed. It may be you need to chop it up into bits and reassemble it! Let's see the picture, and we'll see if we can help. |

Re: Reflections
The only issue I see with that Steve is that the RSPCA may become involved and possibly the Police if you decide to chop up a horse on a public forum ![]() _________________ I was here when things were bad. We finished second one year! Bob Paisley, RIP. |
