Can't work out why
I am working on last week's grave.....OK, so things take me a while.... I have been happily working away and probably just as happily pressing buttons and sliding sliders (that I know nothing about) and I must have done something wrong. When I click on a layer to work on it, it only highlights in light blue instead of dark blue and when I try to adjust something on the layer it shows a 'stop sign' where my brush should be and says "Could not use the brush tool because target channel is hidden" - sadly I don't know what this means and I have tried a bit more button pushing and slider shoving and I still can't free it up - does anyone have any idea what I have done? If I start a 'new layer' it comes back but I don't want a new layer, I want to trim up an 'old' layer. |

Re: Can't work out why
And just to add insult to injury - I gave up and started work on a new layer - then got greedy and tried clicking back onto a previous layer to see if it was inclined to 'work' yet - no it wasn't....and when I clicked back to my new WORKING layer, it wouldn't work either - I would have to find yet another new layer in order to continue....eeek, what AM I doing wrong? |

Re: Can't work out why
Eventer, make sure you have the right layer active, and check the little 'eye' icon next to the layer that you're trying to edit in the Layers palette. If it is turned off you won't be able to edit that layer. Hope that helps! |

I can't make the right layer active - and all are wide eyed and awake. |

What's a "target channel"? |

Ahhh!! The target CHANNEL!! My mistake for not reading the original post closely enough... Same deal, just check your Channels palette and make sure that all of the eyes are turned on there. The "target channel" is just the channel that the program thinks you're trying to edit. |

Re: Can't work out why
It was in "Quick Mask" channel - not sure exactly what that means - but I had left a layer in QM and once I deselected it - everything worked again. Ugh....sorry to waste your time with a stupid question.
Please feel free to tear apart - I can take it (brave smile inserted here) I hope it's ok to post here as it's too late for the Friday Challenge. ![]() |

It's never a waste of time, eventer. Someone else may experience the same problem and now they know - so you have helped them. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Can't work out why
I've often got stuck in that QuickMask trap, without realising I was in it. A real pain. But you really do need to get familiar with QuickMask, it's by far the best way of making complex selections. There's a whole section on it in chapter 1! Great montage, I love the way the mist fades off into the distance, and the arms disappear really well into the hole. Bit of a shadow needed under the skeleton, perhaps? |

Re: Can't work out why
I have been using QM with enthusiasm ever since I started with your book (can't say the same for the dreaded pen tool) It was the 'target channel' that had me confused. Thanks for the help, I will add a shadow tout suite. |

Ah the Pen Tool why do people struggle with it so much especially that now I've come to grips with it I tend to use it more than any other method of selection. Steve do you have a solution in your up and coming book for Pen Tool fear and how to conquer those fears? _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Can't work out why
The Pen Tool has struck fear into the hearts of strong, proud men and women since time immemorial*. You just have to get on with it, eventer! *irrelevant note: 'time immemorial' is actually 1189. It's a legal term relating to events that occurred before the reign of Richard I. |
